Questions To Ask Divorce Lawyers in Dallas

By | Jul 9, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

No one wants to end their marriage, this usually only happens when people feel backed into a corner of some kind, or they feel they have tried everything to solve the problems and nothing works. Once you are sure you need to end your marriage, for whatever the reason, the next thing you need is a good divorce lawyer. But you cannot tell whether an attorney has the skills you need by just looking at his or her smile and asking how much they charge. If you are expecting to get the results you need from getting a divorce, you need to be prepared to interview a few Dallas lawyers before you make your decision.

Probably the most important question to ask is, "How much divorce court experience do you have?" If your attorney has handled only one or two cases before, they may not have the background you need to handle the kind of life changing matters that will come up in your case. They may be very smart and attractive. They may have been at the top of their class, but if they have not been in court handling divorce cases, they probably are not capable of performing the "blood and guts battle" you may need, especially if you think yours may be an adversarial type of case. You can actually ask your would-be attorney, "How many divorces that have circumstances similar to mine have you handled in the past, and how long ago was that?" It may even be a good idea to ask if they specialize in divorces or if this is simply a portion of their practice. And don't forget to ask about mediation and how that works, it may save you time and trouble if your case is not too "involved."

If you have children, don't make the mistake of not asking if this Dallas divorce attorney also handles custody cases. Most divorce lawyers do handle custody cases, too, but there are a few who won't go to battle for your children, after the divorce is final. There is no sense having to go through the tedious process of finding the perfect attorney, if you will only have to do it again, when the custody hearings start taking place. Avoid wasting time, effort, and money and ask beforehand if they do this kind of case also.

If money is a problem for you, ask your attorney if there are things that you can do to help your case and also cut down on your expenses. Ask if they know of any resources to help you pay for your legal actions. Ask if they charge for making copies or long distance calls or any similar items. Ask how much he or she thinks your divorce will cost. They will probably not answer this question directly but their answer may give you information that will help you make a better decision. Just listen to what they say and take notes. Do not be alarmed or offended if you are asked to pay them a small consultation fee. If you have talked to this attorney and have a record of it, they cannot handle your spouse's case which might end up being a good thing for you.

In Dallas there is no shortage of divorce lawyers but you can weed the field down by asking questions – any number of them – and that will help you make an informed decision. Feel free to also talk to as many attorneys as you need to until you find the one who has a performance record that fits your needs. Talk to your friends and family and ask if they know of someone who is good – but don't forget to interview their lawyer, a sentimental choice may be worse then picking someone blind folded. You can also start your search by looking in the phone book or by going to attorney web sites to get good information. Too much information is always better than not enough, especially when it comes to matters that are really going to affect your life and lifestyle and especially as things pertain to your Texas estate planning. Get the representation you deserve. You don't have to accept the first attorney you happen to stumble upon. Divorce is too important to leave it to chance.
