Work Place

Cardiovascular Technicians work in healthcare environments such as hospitals, doctor’s office, etc.  They normally work regular 9 to 5 hours, 5 days per week.  They may have to work some weekends depending on the type of medical facility they work in.  There is also possibility that they may be on call or have to work longer hours.  There are numerous work hour and work place choices that are sure to fit almost anyone’s lifestyle.


The salary for this position is excellent for those looking to step up from minimum wage.  According to the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals, the average wage is over $42k per year for a cardiovascular technologist and for the technicians, the average salary is over $40k. 

Educational Requirement

The education needed to become a Cardiovascular Technician is usually a one year certificate program.  Students are taught how to do EKG’s and halter monitoring and basic cardiology techniques.  At the two year associates degree level they learn more advanced cardiology techniques and procedures.  Some technicians also take the EKG technician training course since this is one of the most widely used test in diagnosing heart functions.  In some states there may also be a licensure requirement.  If you are interested in becoming a technician or technologist find out the requirements for your state.  Getting certified through one of the professional certification organizations could also be required by your potential employer.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for this career is very promising.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment is expected to grow by 29 percent by 2020.  This is mostly due to imaging technology being used to replace exploratory surgical procedures.  This makes Cardiovascular Technology a premiere field to go into.
