In 1671 the Pirate Henry Morgan attacked Panama City and virtually destroyed it. A new city was rebuilt some kilometers to the west of the rubble of the old site. The ruins are available for people to visit and sight-see, they are called Panama Viejo. It was for this attack that Morgan was finally arrested for; instead of punishment he received recognition and was awarded the role of Governorship of Jamaica. Because of the pirate population that was in Panama City, there are many places to tour to learn more facts about the seventeenth century men that hustled this region.
