Rainbow Roses

These psychedelic looking rainbow roses are real roses whether you believe it or not, christened rainbow roses in the trade clearly they did not attain their multi colored appearance naturally They are the latest brainwave of Dutch flower grower Peter Van de Werken, The rose petals on these roses have taken on this rainbow aspect by a process known in the flower trade as stem dying, not a new technique by any means, a technique that has been around since the Victorian era. An established florist's trick to get such flowers as chrysanthemums and carnations and then a little later roses to absorb colors via placing their stems in varying colored dyes hence blue roses .You can try this at home with food coloring. What differs here is the number of different colors of dye absorbed by each rose blossom and that a professional floral dye is used ,basically the roses stem is cut into several portions each is placed into a different colored ink or dye each stem section then delivers that color to the rose petals to which it is directly attached, just like you would suck a drink through a straw, fortunately your head does not change to match the drink you have just consumed, Most likely these rainbow roses started their life as white roses as flower dyers long ago discovered white blooms accepted colors best, kind of better to start off with a blank canvas type principle ,as the white flowers themselves carry no colored pigment to distort the color effect of the mechanically introduced one.
Rainbow roses are available in either fresh or freeze dried form the difference apart from price, freeze dried rainbow roses being more costly, because they are freeze dried which on the whole means that nearly all of the moisture that they would of contained as a fresh bloom has been removed thus giving them a much longer life, under the right conditions a freeze dried bouquet will keep for years.
A technique that today's brides favor not only for their bouquets which they can now keep themselves as a wedding souvenir, but for the rose petals that have recently become the latest thing for the bridal toss where many churches and hotels will not allow fresh rose petals, they will allow freeze dried because nearly all moisture has been removed they do not stain fabrics and carpets in the same way fresh rose petals do. So if you're about to get married and liked the look of the rainbow roses freeze dried is definitely the way to go.
