raw food bars

Skipping meals is neither good for our stomachs nor our health but for many people with busy schedules, forgetting to have a meal now and then is almost inevitable. Food bars present a convenient solution to this problem. Not only do they require no preparation, they're also easy to bring around and you can just grab one whenever you’re feeling hungry. If you're in a situation where only unhealthy processed food is available, packing a food bar would be better than having an unhealthy meal. This article reviews three healthy and nutrient-packed 100-calorie raw food bars by Raw Revolution.

Why Raw Food Bars

Before we go into the specific reviews, why raw food bars?

  • They provide energy without being loaded with refined sugars
  • They contain healthy ingredients that are not as processed as other food bars
  • They taste great!
  • If you're trying to go out a raw food diet, these food bars are handy when there aren't any places selling raw food nearby or you're not able to prepare your own.

Chocolate Crave Raw Food Bar Review

The Chocolate Crave Raw Food Bar is a delicious and nutty organic raw vegan food bar made from the following (organic) ingredients: cashews, sunflower seed kernels, agave nectar, dates, cocoa processed with alkali, almonds, and sprouted flax seed. Not only is every bite delicious and nutty, the Raw Rev 100 Chocolate Crave is also free from common allergens such as gluten, peanut and dairy.

If you love snacking on nuts, this food bar is perfect for you. It's sweet enough to satisfy any sugar craving but not overly sweet that you get sick of it. The combination of nuts and chocolate made it taste somewhat like a semi-crunchy brownie.

Cherry Chocolate Chunk Raw Food Bar Review

Raw Revolution 100 Calorie Organic Live Food Bars, Cherry Chocolate Chunk, 20 Count, 0.8oz Bars
Amazon Price: $17.00 $14.05 Buy Now
(price as of Dec 25, 2015)
The Cherry Chocolate Chunk food bar is uncooked, vegan, gluten-free, peanut-free and dairy-free. The ingredients in this bar are quite different from the previous one and seem to be more processed. The Cherry Chocolate Chunk is made from almonds, dates, sunflower seed kernels, agave nectar, chocolate chunks, cherries, sprouted flax seed, sea salt, and cherry flavor. The chocolate chunks are made from cane sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, and vanilla extract.

This bar is definitely too sweet. Although it says on the packaging that it does not contain refined sugar, it sure contains lots of sugar from other sources. I found myself not wanting to eat this bar after the first bite because the cherry flavor and the sweetness were overwhelming. The chocolate chunks were delicious but the overall sweetness of this food bar was a turn off for me.

Chocolate & Coconut Bliss Raw Food Bar Review

Raw Rev 100, Chocolate & Coconut 100 Calorie Organic Live Food Bar, 0.8-Ounce Bars (Pack of 26)

The Chocolate Coconut Bliss food bar is made from similar ingredients to the Chocolate Crave but with coconut. It contains all organic cashews, sunflower seed kernels, agave nectar, coconut, dates, cocoa processed with alkali, almonds and sprouted flax seed. Similarly, this is raw, vegan, as well as gluten, peanut, and dairy free.

I didn't really like coconut and I thought it kind of hid the taste of chocolate in the food bar. Perhaps you'll enjoy it better if you like coconut. Like the Chocolate Crave, Chocolate Coconut Bliss was sweet but not overly so. I kept biting into shreds of coconut too - again it might be a good thing if you like coconut.

The Best Raw Food Bar

Out of the three, the one I loved the most was Chocolate Crave raw food bar. It wasn’t too sweet, none of the ingredients were too “strong” and it was just tasty overall. The Chocolate Coconut Bliss wasn’t too bad as well but I guess I just don’t like coconut. Others who’ve tried the Chocolate Coconut Bliss thought it was good though. I recommend both of these bars for light snacking or if you are unable to get a proper meal. You’ll probably want another bar or two if you're using them as a meal replacement since these are only 100 calories each.

The one that I would definitely not be getting is Cherry Chocolate Chunks. I still have a whole box of it and I’m not looking forward to finishing it. This food bar is just too sweet and I don’t like how it contains flavoring and additional cane sugar on top of the agave nectar. I’ll probably throw this out and get more boxes of Chocolate Crave instead.

Finally, it is worthy to note that even though all three food bars are made by the same company, the ingredients are not equal. I found it pretty surprising that Cherry Chocolate Chunks contained cherry flavor and had additional cane sugar in the chocolate chunks when the other two had relatively healthier ingredients. I probably wouldn't have bought the Cherry Chocolate Chunks food bars if I had read the ingredient list properly before making my purchase. Whether you're getting Raw Revolution Food Bars or other food bars, it would be a good idea to check the ingredients properly before making your purchase.
