I have found prepaid phones to be much cheaper than contract phones for the amount of usage I need. I used to be on a 450-minute plan (contract) costing me $40. Or rather, that was what it was supposed to cost. Not once during the two years I had that plan was my actual bill less than 50 bucks. After the hidden charges and fees were added on, the minutes were actually quite expensive. And even more expensive if I went over 450 minutes!
Now I use a NET10 prepaid phone which ALWAYS costs 10c per minute, anytime, long distance and some international destinations included. No roaming charges, no hidden fees, no credit check, no fuss.

Prepaid phones are great for people who need low minutes and basic phones. However, if you're looking for full featured service or want more than one phone on your account, it's better to go postpaid.
