When you decide to make meditation a part of your life, getting a meditation cushion is one of the best things to do. Even if most of the people don’t see it like that, meditation is like a new sport. It will be a lot easier to practice if you have the proper equipment.

Of course, you can practice meditation without any other accessories. To meditate, all you need is a quiet and comfortable place.

Some advanced meditator can meditate everywhere, even in populated and noisy environments. But for beginners, it’s more important to create the best facilities.

Why should you get a meditation cushion?

First of all, a meditation cushion can make your meditation experience a more pleasant one.

Those who start meditating, discover soon that it’s not as simple as it may seem. In our modern culture, most of time we are very busy, we live in a stressful environment and we have a lot of concerns. So, it’ will be difficult in the beginning to just stay still and focus on only one thing, like respiration.

A good level of relaxation it’s essential before and during the meditation practice. And that’s one of the roles of a meditation cushion: it will offer the possibility to get relaxed more easily.

Another reason a meditation cushion is useful is that it will keep unwanted pains away from you. Sitting in the lotus and half-lotus postures or even in the kneeling posture (called also Seiza) is not something very natural for our bodies, especially at the start. Very often, sitting in these postures causes pains in many parts of the body, pains that will keep you away from finding the inner peace.

So, instead of getting more in touch with yourself, the pain will distract your attention and will bring you closer to frustration than to calm.

Which type of meditation cushion is right for you?

The choice of  a meditation cushion depends on several factors, like the type of meditation practice you want to start, your flexibility, your height, your experience and the areas of the body that need most of protection from tensions.

A meditation cushion is useful especially when you would like to practice the next meditation postures: lotus and half-lotus, Seiza and sitting meditation.

A good idea could be to practice meditation in the beginning without a cushion and then discover where the distress appears most in your body. Some sensible areas might be: the shoulders, the spine, the back, the ankles or the knees

Round cushions, also called Zafu, are the most popular among those who prefer lotus postures. They are more suited for beginners.  Zafu will lift your hips and will offer the proper support for your back. When you want also to cushion your knees and ankles, it’s a good idea to combine a Zafu with a Zabuton , a traditional Japanese cushion for sitting.

Another option is to use a rectangular meditation cushion with or without a Zabuton. The advantage of the rectangular cushion is that it’s not as high as the Zafu, so it might be more comfortable for average height or little people. Usually, the people who choose rectangular meditation cushions are the advanced meditators.

For kneeling posture most of the tension will concentrate in the knees and ankles. The most suited to support this posture are the Zabuton or a rectangular meditation cushion, but a zafu could do also a good job.

When practicing the sitting meditation posture, you can use a normal chair and just add a sitting cushion or a Zabuton. They will protect your lower back.

Meditation cushions prices

Prices for the meditation cushions depend on producer, the cushion's quality and on the supplier you chose. Either you look for a zafu, for rectangular meditation cushions or for a Zabuton, the price will range between 25$ and 70$.

If you decide that you need a meditation cushion, the best thing will be to get a meditation cushion set. Normally is cheaper than getting all products separately.

I wish you to make the most appropriated choices for you and to enjoy your meditation practice.

For some reason, I always thought that I had to just deal with the discomfort. Thanks for your ideas :)

I was thinking the same, some months ago. Then, one person who practices advanced meditation told me that I won't be able to meditate until I'm not completely relaxed. And i discovered that he was right... :)
