Recognizing the Signs of Diabetes in Adults

Diabetes is characterized by extremely high sugar levels in the blood and is a very serious medical issue. To get an idea of how large the issue of diabetes has become, you should know that more than 17 million people in the United States have diabetes. You should never wait to get medical advice if you experience signs of diabetes as an adult. You need to be treated right away. If you wait, your condition could threaten your life. You do not want this to happen, since diabetes is a condition that is treatable.

You do need to know why your sugar level is too high. Typically, this occurs for one of two reasons. The first is that your pancreas is not making enough insulin. The second is that your body is not effectively using the insulin. Insulin is the element in your body that maintains the level of sugar in your blood. Normally, it keeps the sugar in check.

Some of the signs you should be aware of are: extreme tiredness, blurry vision, and an extreme desire to eat and drink. If you are male, you should know that diabetes can render you impotent. You will also have to keep an eye on any cuts on your skin because they will need more time to heal. The sign you will probably notice the most is that you will have to visit the bathroom a lot.

To determine whether or not your signs are related to diabetes, you must go to a physician for an examination. You are probably going to have to undergo a blood test that is called a fasting blood sugar level test. If the sugar in your blood is over 126mg for each deciliter, then you are suffering from diabetes. If you have a level of 100mg and 126mg for each deciliter, you have the symptoms of pre-diabetes.

Once you are diagnosed, the standard form of diabetes treatment is to take injections of insulin to regulate your blood sugar. Moreover, you will have to eat better, which means you have to learn about what the foods are which are beneficial to you and which foods could make your condition even worse.
