Furniture from Pallets

wood pallet furniture: furniture from pallets

There are a bunch of reasons why pallet furniture is a great choice, and I want to go over them in this section. First off, pallet furniture is very inexpensive. If you've ever worked in a warehouse, as I have, you'll know that pallets come and go by the millions. There are a lot of pallet recyclers out there, but for the most part when they arrive, they need to be thrown out or dismantled. There is a lot of great wood going to waste there! Pallet furniture is inexpensive because it makes use of a cheap or free commodity.

Another reason furniture from pallets is a great concept is pallets are really structurally sound

. You can use a pallet for the foundation of almost any piece. I've seen them used for everything from chairs to bookshelves to bedframes. The way they are constructed they really hold a lot of weight. If you've ever tried to smash up a pallet with a sledge hammer, you'll know I'm telling the truth!

Wood pallet furniture is great because it has a vintage vibe to it, and it also has a shabby chic feel. Any piece you make will have automatic cool points for this reason.

Pallet Furniture: Where To Go, What To Do

To start your own pallet furniture project, I'd check out what's been done online already. There are actually a ton of free plans for furniture made from pallets, so this will be inexpensive and easy for you to do!

You can sometimes claim pallets

for your pallet furniture projects for free. Think about your work, or the workplace of a friend. Sometimes you just need to ask and they'll let you haul away a pallet or two for free. If that doesn't work, you can go to a place that specializes in pallet recycling. They will charge you, but it's really quite reasonable, and you can be sure you'll get a high quality one.

Once you have your pieces, proceed with your plan. One important thing with pallet furniture is that you'll need to finish it. Pallet furniture must be sanded down and properly coated: the wood used in these things is rarely treated and is usually quite rough. Sand down your pallet furniture to ensure your guests won't be getting splinters!

Even if you don't construct furniture from pallets, consider using them as structural support pieces. Who needs a box spring mattress if you have a couple of these babies to throw under your bed frame? You can paint them a solid color to make them more attractive, or cover them up. Pallet furniture is a great choice for a workshop or backyard / patio furniture.

Good Luck!
