It's Your Wedding, Do What You Want

Ok, so we know that wedding dresses are historically white, at least in American culture.  Today, many couples are moving away from the traditional and moving toward choosing wedding themes and colors that makes them happy. It is not uncommon today to find gothic wedding themes, fairytale wedding themes, Halloween wedding themes and a score of others. My wedding dress was gold. That is right, shimmering, beautiful and bold. I was the bride and EVERYBODY, including the blind, knew it.  I sometimes wish I could have ten more weddings (with the same hubby of course-smile) just so I could have different wedding color themes.  However, since I am neither Mrs. Trump nor Mrs. Gates, I will just have to live vicariously through others (smile). One of the most fascinating and vibrant colors in the color spectrum is red.  In some cultures, such as the Indian culture, women wear red wedding dresses. Red is bold, exciting, regal and it is just warm and inviting in general.  So if you are thinking of having a red-themed wedding, red assured that you are not crazy to think it is possible to deviate from the norm because many have already done it.  Just remember that this is your day and your memories, so do what makes you happy. If you like red and want a red-theme wedding, then do it.

Choose Your Wedding Dress

Ok, let’s talk wedding dresses. There are many ways that you can have the perfect wedding dress.  If you are designer, you can certainly design and make your own.  However, if not here are some options for you:

  1. Go to the pattern store and buy the pattern of a wedding dress, ball gown or formal dress that you really like.  With the pattern, you can take it to a seamstress and explain to them exactly what you want and they can use the pattern to create it for you. Some seamstresses will even help you pick out the fabric or order it for you. If you find a dress online that you like, and can't find a pattern, some seamstresses/tailors can make the dress freestyle-meaning they can recreate it without a pattern. Here is your chance to be as creative as you like with your wedding dress. Is the wedding in fall, or winter? Ask the seamstress to make a lined cape to go with it.
  2. Order a red wedding dress online.  Many online stores sell wedding dresses including Amazon; choose one of them. This is an option if you do not have the budget to have your wedding dress tailor-made.
  3. Buy a white wedding dress and have it professionally dyed to your desired color.

Choose the Right Pair of Shoes

Most wedding dresses are long and will cover the feet, but that does not mean that you can’t have your princess styled wedding shoes. After all, you are not just getting a pedicure for your honeymoon.  You can get pretty princess shoes online, through a wedding catalog or at a local department store.  After you choose the style of your dress, you can choose the best type of shoes to go with it.

Oh That Tasty Wedding Cake!

You can’t really have a red-themed wedding without a proper wedding cake. For this, you really should get a professional cake maker to do this if you want it to have the impact you intend.  The outer décor can be red and whatever other colors you decide. However, the inside can be rich, dark, and chocolate with rum flavor. It can be vanilla butter cream, or it could be a luxurious red velvet cake to go along with the red theme. It is totally up to you, but the sky is really the limit when it comes to choosing the flavor of your cake. The point again is to do whatever makes you happy. If you choose the rum cake, just make sure you have a smaller, separate and rum-free one for the kids. :)

You will need other things of course, such as makeup, lingerie, makeup, bridesmaid dresses and hair accessories. However, once you get the big items out of the way, the rest is easy.  If you are planning a red-themed wedding, your should start a little earlier since it may take more planning in order to coordinate your theme color with each element of your wedding. Your best friend is really going to be time, so use it wisely to bring all of these elements together.
