This morning as I stumbled out the door to begin my morning walk I ran into a rainbow. Funny how a simple thing can instantly change your outlook on the day.
This morning as I gazed at that rainbow I reflected on new life and new beginnings. You see my oldest daughter is giving birth this morning. Looking at this rainbow I could not help but think what a wonderful way to start a day, what a wonderful way to start a life.
A new baby girl will soon be with us. She will be burden free, she will have boundless opportunity, she can be anything she desires. She knows no fears, no limiting beliefs and has no pre-conceived notions.
This new little baby girl is starting with a clean slate and has no ceiling. She just needs to be pointed in the right direction. Her guidance and nurturing falls on her parents, grandparents, friends and the outside world. She will only have one opportunity to be raised the right way.
What prepares us for this responsibility. We do not have to take tests or become certified to be parents, caregivers, role models or nurturers.
The feeling of apprehension that I felt as I walked was we can not mess this up. Parental love comes naturally. Does the strength, patience, persistence, wisdom and energy to be on the job 24/7 come with it.
We can draw on our experience, both good and bad. We have the advantage of knowing what worked and what did not. We remember those warm moments from childhood and we remember those times when we felt adrift.
This little baby girl has not yet had to make any decisions or choices. She has not yet had to do or not do something that she will regret later in life. When that first time comes will we have given her the right guidance to make a choice or decision confidently and wisely.
There is a circle of life and as this little baby girl and I pass each other going in opposite directions I discover that I envy her. I envy her clean slate and boundless opportunities. I only wish I could cradle her and magically transfer everything I've experienced and all the knowledge I have.
So to you little baby girl I say welcome and leave these thoughts to help you along the way.
"May your trails be winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds" Edward Abbey
"Today you are you that is truer than true, there is no one alive who is youer than you" Dr. Suess
