Step 1: Your first step in obtaining serious back pain relief or pain relief for anything is almost always going to consist of identifying the cause of your discomfort. Once you are able to understand what is causing your pain you are put in a position to limit or avoid that factor or activity or at the very least go about finding the right way to overcome it. If there is no identifiable reason to explain the symptoms that you are experiencing then you will want to start with step 2.

Step 2: Seek a medical diagnosis before attempting any activities or medications aimed at relieving lower back pain. This is a safe guard to ensure that you are treating it properly. A treatment aimed at helping sciatica is not necessarily going to be the most effective in easing pain caused by muscle spasms, herniated discs and some treatments may even exacerbate a condition or cause serious harm if used to treat a condition improperly.

Step 3: Consider your treatment options and choose the ones proven most effective in relieving lower back pain symptoms for a condition such as yours. There are often several options available, depending on the cause of your pains, your options may consist of: massage, physical therapy, acupuncture, medication, hot/cold compresses, soaks (medicated and/or non-medicated), medication, surgery, exercise or a combination of several treatments.

Step 4: Fix your living conditions to be more pain-free and ergonomic to help find longer term relief. There are little things around the home that can be changed and utilized that will assist in relieving lower back pain. These changes can include: changing your mattress (firmer or softer depending on need), seating with built in back support, utilize grabber tools to prevent over-reaching or awkward stretching, moving low-lying items to easily accessible heights.

Step 5: Strengthen your lifestyle with back strengthening exercises to alleviate or reduce your chances of spasms, pulls, strains and other painful conditions. This step is also briefly mentioned in treatment options but deserves a step all its own because it is just that important. For a majority of the causes of back pain, strength can play a part. A key part in strength is exercising properly. So exercise regularly and properly to achieve your goal of relieving lower back pain.

Some back strengthening exercises consist of the; hip bridge, McKenzie exercises, Lumbar Stabilization, bird-dog, prone arm and leg lifts. One of the key factors in successful exercising in proper posture so make a point to pay attention to posture at all times even when not exercising.
