Remodeling a Basement by Yourself

By Edited Nov 18, 2016 0 0

That dark extra room underneath your house is more than just your basement. It's actually a pot of gold waiting to be discovered. That extra space can be the solution to your problems. Do you need another room? Are you aching for a theater room or an office?

The basement can be lots of things given the right attention and a few investments that can sometimes be expensive, but totally worth it once it's done. If you're going to be remodeling a basement by yourself, here are a few basics that you should know about having a good and safe room to function and live in:

1. Sturdy stairs – You would probably go up and down a lot and having a good, strong staircase would lessen your hesitance to go down the basement. Check your basement staircase for any damage, splinters, loose nails, etc. If it's not in good condition to use, have a carpenter fix it.

2. Lighting – Nobody wants to stay in a room that's dark and depressing. Let more light into your basement if you have windows. If the window opening is small, have it renovated and made bigger so you can have more light in the room. If you don't have windows, invest more on lights.

3. Functionality – you should decide now if you really don't need anymore storage space and that you're ready to turn your basement into a new room. If you don't decide beforehand, you might end up with a remodeled basement and few unwanted things scattered all over the room. Remodeling a basement needs a commitment. It means that you can no longer just simply throw things you don't use anymore into the basement and never look back.

4. Mold and electrical wires – Check your basement for water pipes and electrical wires. Everything must be in order and functioning properly. A leaky pipe may lead to a moldy basement and a damaged electrical wire can lead to a house on fire. So double check everything.

Remodeling a basement can be fun since it can add more excitement to an old house. More and more people are now using their basements as lounge areas, extra bedrooms, and theater rooms since remodeling a basement is the most practical way of adding more space into your house without a major renovation.

Knowing how to finish a basement on your own can save you a ton of money, if you want to make it even easier consider using a basement finishing system.
