You can make up a box for charity and if you have time, hold an automobile boot sale or log onto a web auction, then put the results of your sold products towards some redecorating or a new carpet. Work out how many boxes you'll need and get these well ahead.

Consider what else will be helpful ,eg strong tape, bubble wrap, and self-seal bags for keeping nuts and bolts together. Don't totally fill large boxes, as they'll be too heavy to move.

Use robust packing boxes, especially for heavier items, or your things may finish up dispersed all over the pavement.

Boxes made of corrugated cardboard are stronger than regular ones. You can generally find these at shops, off-licences or large retail outlets, but ensure that they're clean.

Check that your contents insurance will cover damage and breakages in the move. Put all dangerous materials , for example paint, bleach and aerosols, into a new box and keep them away from the remainder of your stuff. Unless you travel light, you will not be in a position to empty everything in the 1st day, so it's worth deciding what you could need easy accessibility to just after you cross the brink of your brand new home. Pack an 'essentials' box for the 1st night in your brand new place and carry it with you. Immediate access to coffee, tea, nibbles, cups and a kettle could be welcome shortly after you arrive.
