Returning Gifts For Cash Or Credit
Returning Gifts
Store Policies May Vary
Returning a gift to a store for either cash or store credit is sometimes necessary if you have received a duplicate gift from a friend at a birthday party or any other special occasion. Read this article for a simple step by step system for returning gifts to stores in exchange for store credit or cash. Note that each store has its own specific policy for making returns, and of course you will need to adhere to each store’s individual return policy.
Whenever possible, get a gift receipt for the gift you are hoping to return from the friend who gave you the gift. These days, people frequently enclose gift receipts in the cards that they give along with the gifts. If your friend forgets to enclose the gift receipt, you may still want to ask your friend to give it to you. Friends understand that people sometimes receive duplicate gifts and want to return gifts that they already own.
Once you have the gift receipt in hand, your second step is to bring it to the store along with the gift that you are hoping to return. Present the gift you are returning and the gift receipt to a store clerk at the specially designated customer service or guest service counter. The clerk will let you know your options. Some stores only give store credit for returned gifts, whereas other stores will give you cash for the returned item.
After you have made your choice between cash or store credit (if you have been given a choice), your third step is to fill out (or sign or put your initials on) any necessary paperwork that the clerk gives you in order to complete the exchange process.
Note that it is sometimes possible to return a gift to a store even if you do not have the gift receipt in hand. Simply explain to the clerk at the customer service desk that your friend gave you this gift, and that the item was purchased at this store. The clerk will let you know what the store’s policy is for this situation. Always maintain a pleasant, positive attitude with the clerk at the store to ensure that the transaction goes as smoothly as possible.
Whenever you purchase a gift for a friend, make sure to ask the cashier for a gift receipt so that you can enclose it in the card that you give to your friend along with the gift. That way, if your friends need to return any gifts you have given them, they will already have the necessary gift receipts in hand.
