Why Choose An Electric Breast Pump Over A Manual Pump?

So you need a breast pump but have no idea what product to choose. Why would you decide on an electric breast pump? The main reasons are ease of use, time saving and greater comfort. A manual pump is physically tiring and time consuming. In this busy world we live in, no one really has the time to pump manually. Not only is it more time consuming but having a baby on its own creates little opportunity for oneself let alone finding time to pump by hand. With an electric pump I find you can literally pump one breast while the baby feeds on the other breast. This would not be possible if you had to pump manually. Manual pumping is tiring on your hand and you may not be able to get enough milk out in this manner. Electric pumps are stronger allowing you to get greater milk flow. It is more affordable and cheaper to buy a manual pump however in the long run it may be more costly for you because you realize the manual pump is not working for you. In the end, you are left with no alternative but to buy an electric pump as well.

The Specifications Of The Spectra Dew 350

The Spectra Dew 350 is a ‘hospital grade’ electric breast pump. Originally these machines were made only for hospitals and the same hospital grade technology is used in making this pump. Spectra has been used and trusted by hospitals since 1999.

This pump allows for both single and dual pumping. You can buy the pump with one attachment for single pumping or with two for dual pumping. Depending on your needs this will determine what you would like to purchase. For example if you are a working mom and will be pumping at work throughout the day then I suggest going for a dual pump. This allows you to get the optimum benefits from your time versus milk production. The pump is very quiet that you do not need to worry about disturbing anyone at work. It also ensures the continued milk production being away from your baby. If you are a stay at home mom then you may only need a single pump as you could feed baby on the one side while pumping on the other as I mentioned earlier. The appliance's attachments are quick and easily assembled. All of the attachments are BPA free that come into contact with your milk and the unit has a one year quality guarantee. This machine also has a disposable back flow prevention attachment to ensure no milk gets into the unit and builds up mold.

The machine mimics the baby’s suckling motion having 46 cycles per minute. The speed of the suction can easily be adjusted to your comfort and needs with a dial button on the front of the machine.

As easy as it is to use it is just as easy to clean. The attachments all easily assemble and dissemble. The machine comes with simple instructions that are easily understood in terms of care and maintenance of the unit as well as for your daily usage of the pump.[1]

Personal Experience With The Pump

I bought the Spectra Dew 350 electric breast pump for my second baby. I had a manual pump for my first baby which was a nightmare! The manual pump was tiring to use and produced hardly any milk from pumping. I did not produce enough milk by the time my first baby was 6 weeks old and had to supplement his feeds with formula. With my second baby my husband researched the best and most affordable electric breast pump. He found the Spectra got fantastic reviews and it was far more affordable than other electric pumps which had some not so good reviews. We purchased our pump from Takealot at a great price.

From the beginning the Spectra Dew was fantastic to use. As a stay at home mom I only needed the single pumping system and this also allowed me to feed my baby on one side and pump on the other. I quite like this as well as my baby would feed for short durations so pumping first and then feeding her would ensure she got the good fatty parts of my breast milk.

Milk Matters

I found I only needed to pump for less than 10 minutes per breast as within this time I had already filled the bottle. The pump was great in relieving full breasts and assisted in my daughters feeding. She did not enjoy feeding from a full breast which would over flow her with milk. Pumping made it easier for her to feed. It also increased my milk supply and as a result I have not needed to even consider top up feeds for her like I had to with my son. The milk I do pump I freeze in the Spectra freezer bags for days dad wants to feed her, possible babysitting times or if I think she could do with some extra milk. The machine even assisted in increasing my milk supply to such a degree that I am able to donate my excess breast milk to Milk Matters an organization that supplies hospitals with breast milk for premature babies and those in need.

Reviews often talk of how the Spectra Dew 350 allows them to collect 100ml or more of milk in as little as 7 minutes. Many reviews speak of how the pump is easy to use, great value for money and in comparison to other electric breast pumps, works much more efficiently.

A lot of moms have commented at how this appliance has saved their milk supply, having had troubles in the past with breastfeeding. The appliance has assisted moms to breastfeed their babies exclusively without resorting to topping up with formula milk.

The Spectra Team offers great customer support and welcomes feedback from its customers. If any customer is having difficulty with the pump they quickly urge them to contact the customer support team to assist them.[2]

In conclusion I would strongly recommend buying this electric breast pump – save yourself time, money and give yourself and your baby the great benefits from using this breast pump!
