West Virginia will be saying goodbye to a most beloved figure this week. Robert C Byrd has been a senator for for over nine terms, wich is way over 20 thousand days. During his record breaking career and being the longest US Senator to serve in history, he has cast over eighteen thousand votes.
He is a man of many personal accomplishments. And this is remarkable in the fact that he was born into poverty and spent many of his years in foster care. This quote is from President Barrack Obama
"Senator Byrd's story was uniquely American. He was born into wrenching poverty, but educated himself to become an authoritative scholar, respected leader, and unparalleled champion of our Constitution. He scaled the summit of power, but his mind never strayed from the people of his beloved West Virginia. He had the courage to stand firm in his principles, but also the courage to change over time. "
My favorite part is the last line.. the courage to stand firm on his principles but also the courage to change over time..I think that sums up how he was able to stay in office until 92 years of age!
He was married for 69 years until his wife passed away. He was also the first senator to ever get his law degree while in office. Senator Byrd played a mean fiddle! He would often use his musical talent on the campaign trail. He is also the author of five books.
He was an advocate for the out doors and wanting to protect West Virginia's beauty. Helped intiatives to protect the Monongahela National Forest and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Senator Byrd is responsible for looking after out Veterans. He helped get funding for the renovations of the four Veteran's Adminstration hospitals in out state. He helped establish VA outreach programs too.
It surprises me as a native West Virginian how negative the feedback was when I went to a blog site to discuss what good he has done in our state. Anyone familiar with this Senator knows he did spend some time as a memeber of the KKK when he was young. This was not something he is proud of and has since repented.
Another person commented on how he would only build infostructures that were in his name. This makes me smile. West Virgina does have over 50 infastructures that are named after Robert C Byrd! These schools, bridges, buildings ect all brought jobs to our state and a little more money into our economy. Senator Byrd's Website states he brought over 1.4 billion dollars to our state by building Federal buildings in our state
I could go on an on. West Virginia will be saying goodbye to someone very special in the next couple of days.. and I just wanted you to know about him.....
