Rojales
One of the most beautiful Spanish towns on the Costa Blanca is called Rojales. The Costa Blanca is in the province of Alicante and stretches along the coastline for about 200 km. It was given the name of Costa Blanca by the airline company BAE in 1959 as a publicity stunt for its new flight service from London to Valencia. Tourism is one of the larger industries in the region and Rojales is no exception.
Rojales is situated in a largely tourist community about 10 minutes drive from the beautiful coastal town of Guardamar del Segura. Guardamar del Segura has some of the most beautiful beaches along the whole coast with excellent bar front cafés and shops. Guardamar also offers a wide variety of restaurants and bars in the town itself and there are regular markets catering for food, clothing, and craft pieces.
To the south of Rojales and Guardamar is the towns of Torrevieja and Cuidad Quesada which is very popular with tourists most of the year around. The population of Rojales is around 16,000 although this can rise significantly during the tourist season because of the influx of visitors. The town can be reached via two very different airports. Alicante Airport in the north which is about 35 minutes drive from Rojales, serves many countries throughout Europe. Murcia Airport to the south, which is around 30 minutes drive, so a little bit closer to Rojales, is a tiny Airport in comparison to Alicante but still offers a great service.
Rojales is situated on the River Segura, as are the neighboring towns of Orihuela and Guardamar. Rojales has relied on irrigation from the River Segura for centuries. Originally the Moors came here and established themselves in the area, constructing the necessary irrigation for the local agriculture. It is still used to this day and there are many artifacts relating to the history of the River which have been preserved magnificently in the area.
Elche is a beautiful city to the north of Rojales and well worth a day trip. The population of Elche is around 230,000 and is currently ranked 20th largest Spanish city. It is also the third-largest city in the Valencian community. It is especially known for its magnificent palm groves. These palm groves have been declared a world heritage site and contain well over 200,000 palm trees.
Because Rojales is so centrally situated there are plenty of things for you to do in this locale. You can take a trip to the coast just to take in some sun on the beautiful beaches or take part in some of the many water sports that are available in the area. There is some fantastic nightlife to be had in Torrevieja and Orihuela, or you can head up the coast Benidorm. Rojales is always going to offer you Spanish charm mixed with plenty of English-speaking hostelries for you to frequent.
