The basic function of the placemats is the same regardless of the shape but function isn't the only important thing when it comes to your table. A placemat with curved sides usually takes up a little less space than rectangular placemats. This is easy to see if you layer a round placemat on top of a rectangle shaped mat. While you might not care about this small difference in size if you have a large table, it can make a big difference if space is a concern when you serve dinner each night. Switching to round placemats can help you squeeze in another place setting or just leave a little extra room for serving dishes or small items like salt and pepper shakes or a sugar bowl.

Don't be afraid to pick up a set of placemats that don't match your dishes or the rest of your table. A bright spot of contrasting color can have a big impact on a table decorated with neutral colors. You can also match your mats to the current season or an upcoming holiday to give your table a fun and festive look. The beauty of placemats is that you easily swap them out if you aren't happy with the look and they're inexpensive enough to experiment with without feeling guilty if one design or color doesn't work out for you.

While plastic and laminate placemats are usually very durable and not prone to staining, fabric placemats can become discolored by food or drink spills. You can't completely avoid this issue but you can be prepared with a few extra placemats just in case you need to switch out or replace one that becomes destroyed. Try to but a few spares every time you purcase a new set of placemats because you might not be able to find the exact same design later when you need it. This is also something to keep in mind if you make your own placemats because making an extra one or two mats could save you from having to create an entire new set.

You can make your own round placemats for special occasions or everday use. one easy way to make placemats is to cut paper to the desired shape and size and then apply clear laminate to both the front and back of the paper. You can use wrapping paper, construction paper or even cardstock. This is also a great craft for kids because they can decorate the paper to their heart's content and then you can preserve it with the clear laminate.
