Running Games on a Cheap Netbook - More Fun Than You Would Think

By | Mar 16, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

For those who expect the right things from their netbooks an older title can still be fun. Running games on netbooks may sound strange at first, but in spite of the popular assumption netbooks are not as slow and powerless as people think.

Netbooks run old games just fine and even some recent games are fun to play on them. For those who know what to expect even a cheap laptop can be a great fun.

If you don't know what Transport Tycoon Deluxe is, you probably want to take a look around on the net. It's been around for more than a decade and now there is an open source rewrite. It can be played online or with friends over local network, and for those who like strategies this strategy simulator can be a real hit.

Everyone knows Starcraft. It was released in 1998 and is one of the most popular competitively played games around the world. While Korean hardcore gamers may pick a powerhouse to play it, you will be just fine playing against your friends. It is a must for strategy lovers and can be had for a few dollars.

Diablo II is another all time favorite from Blizzard. In 2000 Diablo II was the most popular game and there are still hundreds of thousands play it online over battle.net. Maybe you were not aware of the fact, but the basic netbook runs the game perfectly.

Browser games are the real territory for netbooks. They don't even have to be run on the computer, a browser, an internet connection and some free time is needed for some hours of fun. Travian and Imperion are amongst the most popular free browser games, but Farmville and other facebook applications run well too.

For fans of shooter games Quake 3 is the golden standard. If you like it you may want to give it a spin on your netbook, it will run well if you don't go overboard with the settings.

New netbooks feature ION platform from Nvidia. This platform has a dedicated 9300m video chip instead of the integrated Intel solution. Double core Intel Atom processors and an Ion platform are the things to look for if you can't give up World of Warcraft, even on the go. Recent 12" netbooks will run it fine if you stay away from the right side of sliders in the Graphic Options menu.

Mini notebook computers may be designed to run the browser or a media player only, but you will have great fun blowing the dust off some other games that are still played by millions. It's not always the graphics that makes a game good or fun to play.
