SEO: Keywords

By | 1 Comments | Rating: 3 | |

Keywords are the most important part of SEO. Even if you do all the hard work of gaining good quality backlinks from high ranking sites, it won't matter if you don't properly choose and utilize your keywords. Think about it this way. If you have a high ranking site with bad keywords, Google will never match your site to a relevant search.

Before you start creating your website or writing your article you should sit down and decide what you are going to write about. Now that you have a topic, you should think about all of the different ways that people will search for information related to your topic. Write these keywords down. You won't be using all of them, only a few.

You will want to choose keywords with the most amount of searches and the least amount of competition. That sounds like an oxymoron, and it is. You will have to compromise. To do this, you should use the free Adwords Keyword Tool provided by Google. You will have to type in your keyword and a code to prove that you are human. This will generate a list of keywords, the number of searches they generate, the competition level, and even the average cost of advertising that specific keyword. If a keyword receives 2 million searches per month, and the competition level is maxed out, you can rest assured that the amount of work you would have to do to even see a trickle of traffic would be enormous. You will want to focus on some of the lower ranking keywords in terms of traffic. 5,000 searches per month is still a lot and the competition will be much less.

Now that you have chosen a couple good keywords to focus on with your website or article, there are some SEO tips you should follow to rank high and avoid being penalized by Google.

Most obviously, you should place your keywords in your title tag. With an online article, this would be the title. Online article sites generally transfer the text in your title to the URL. This should tell you something. Make sure you place your keywords somewhere in the URL. Make sure that you use your keywords early and often but be careful not to participate in stuffing. Try to include them in the first sentence of your article or your header tags. Use them often to increase density but keep your writing natural. If it seems like you are forcing yourself to include words that you normally wouldn't, Google will notice this and penalize you. Include your keywords in your meta tags, or article description/introduction, to help improve your search ranking.

Finally you should avoid black hat tricks like stuffing (mentioned above), or including invisible text. Yes this was actually done some time ago, in the dark ages. Google is very particular and won't think twice about blacklisting you. It is very hard to dig yourself out once you have been blacklisted and this article only touches on the keyword portion of that.
