Safe Driving Discounts From The Big Players: Who Offers What

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 1 0

It seems like some people are constantly getting pulled over and cited for unsafe driving practices like speeding, running red lights, and more. Some people seem to get in a car accident frequently, and call on their insurance to foot the bill. If you are one of the safe drivers out there who cannot readily recall when your last accident was (or perhaps you have never been in an accident), and if it's been years since your last citation, you certainly don't deserve to pay the same cost for insurance as the less safe drivers who you share the road with. The good news is that the major insurance companies agree with you, and many offer safe driving discounts that are designed to save conscientious, courteous drivers like you a bundle. You do want to be aware of what these discounts are and who is offering them so you can take full advantage of the savings they provide.

AllState: Safe Driver Discount

AllState is among the most recognizable names in the insurance industry, and they do offer a safe driving discount. In fact, with the Safe Driver discount available through AllState, you may be able to save up to 45% less than your more risky counterparts pay. The company also offers other discounts related to safety, including discounts for vehicle safety equipment like anti-lock brakes, air bags, and other safety equipment on your car. To obtain the safe driver discount through this company, you simply have to contact an agent to get a quote, and the agent will review your driving history to see if you qualify.

State Farm: Steer Clear

The safe driver discount available through the reputable insurer State Farm operates in a different fashio
n. The State Farm Steer Clear Program is essentially a driver's safety course. You can contact the company to obtain a copy of the driver's safety video entitled “Rearview” as well as the other program materials. The program is also available in a mobile app as well as online for your convenience. This program is available to drivers over the age of 24 in select states, so you will want to speak with an agent to determine if you would qualify for this discount before you sign up for the program.

Progressive: Snapshot Discount

The insurance company Progressive has taken a unique approach to giving safe drivers a discount on their good driving habits. Through the Progressive Snapshot program, you first will enroll in the program online. After enrolling, Progressive will mail you an innovative device that you simply plug right into your car. This device will be plugged into your car for six months, and it is used to monitor your actual driving habits on the road. At the end of the thirty day period, you can log in to the Progressive website to see if you qualify for any discounts. The final discount you qualify for will not be finalized until after the six month period. The discount can shave up to 30% off your premium cost.

Nationwide: Vanishing Deductible and Accident Forgiveness

Nationwide offers drivers two different programs. The first is accident forgiveness, which allows essentially provides you with the ability to have one at-fault accident without your policy being hit with an increase in rates. The second program is the vanishing deductible program. This does not reduce your premium, but it can reduce the deductible you pay when you do need to file a claim. Drivers who have not filed a claim with their insurance company can transfer their coverage to Nationwide and enjoy a $100 savings off their deductible from day one. After each calendar year that passes when you do not have a claim filed, Nationwide will further reduce your deductible by $100 per year. The maximum savings under this program is $500 off the deductible price.

Geico: Driving History and Driver's Education Discounts

Geico offers up to a 25% discount off the cost of your auto insurance premium if your driving history is free of accidents for the last five years. In addition to this, the company also features an accident forgiveness program similar to what Nationwide offers. It allows safe drivers to have one accident without the result of increased rates. Further, in some states, Geico also allows drivers to enjoy additional savings from taking a driver's education course. This may be a course that you have already taken, or you can take it today for discounts if this program is available in your state.

Liberty Mutual

You may also be able to benefit from savings on your auto insurance policy through Liberty Mutual if you have a good driving record. The company does not state what it defines as a good driving record, so if you have been free of accidents and citations for several years, you may find it in your best interest to run your own driving history by them to see if you qualify. Liberty Mutual does not offer a specific discount program for safe drivers, but it does state that it offers discounts based on your driving history as well as other factors like the safety equipment inside your car, too.

As you can see, there are a range of different programs designed to help safe drivers like you with a clean driving history to save money on your car insurance. Some of the programs are unique, and are better suited for some drivers over others. You may find it beneficial to shop around and get specific discounts from these various insurance companies to see just how much money you may be able to save by switching. Be sure to ask about these safe driving discounts when you get quotes so you can compare quotes accurately.
