This holiday is observed each year on March 17 because that is the feast day of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. There is a saying that "everyone is Irish on Saint Patrick's Day". Here are some ways to celebrate and enjoy the Irish culture with your children.

Wear Green

One way to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day with your family is to wear green and white on Saint Patty's Day. It is also customary to wear shamrocks. Many stores have a variety of inexpensive items to dress up your holiday outfit, such as blinking shamrocks, hair bows, and pins. Celebrate Saint Patrick's Day with your family with matching fun wearable items.


Go to A Parade

Many cities with a large Irish population have a Saint Patrick's Day parade. If you are nearby, check one out. If not, see if you can watch it on television as a new Saitn Patirck's Day family celebration.

Crafts for Saint Patrick's Day can be found all over the internet. From simple rock painting for "Kissing the Blarney Stone" to more complicated leprechaun hats, your child and you can have a few hours of Irish themed fun.

Cut sandwiches into shamrock shapes with a cookie cutter or make shamrock shaped cookies for a sweet treat.Try eating as many naturally green foods as you can. Don't forget to make yourself an Irish coffee!

Many books for children, both fiction and non-fiction, have been written about this holiday. Another idea for your family to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day is to read these books together. You can go to your local library's holiday section and see what titles they have in circulation. Since other people may also be looking for these books, you will want to request them on-line about two weeks beforehand to make sure that it is available when you want it. Your children can also take books out from their school's library.
