Sales And Marketing Strategy

The Importance of a Sales and Marketing Strategy

Any business these days needs to formulate and follow a well defined sales and marketing strategy. Especially in soft economic times where customer demand may be fickle small business entrepreneurs need to deliberately sit down and forecast business demand, supply, and cash flow. All of these factors among many others should go into developing a sound sales and marketing strategy which works to direct the business forward into the future even in difficult times.

In good times having a well refined sales and marketing strategy is not as important. If you offer product for sale people will come in a buy it. Risk is low as demand is up across the board and for all business sectors. However, when the economy isn't barreling ahead with the wind at it's back only the business owner's with strong control over their processes typically come out ahead of the pack. In fact those business owners who do not have strong controls in place and do not have a well formulated sales and marketing strategy generally find themselves struggling to survive.

Types of Sales and Marketing Strategies

There are many types of sales and marketing strategies that you can implement as a business owner. There is the very unrealistic plan of build it and they will come and then there is the more calculated plan of budget for cash flow and current economic conditions and use customer retention marketing to ensure you stay stable through tough economic times.

It's usual for customer retention to cost less than new customer acquisition and thus this is often considered to be a good defensive sales and marketing strategy. By focusing in on your current customer base though permission based marketing and loyalty programs businesses can often see relatively stable revenue streams in just about any market.

Businesses can also implement a robust sales and marketing strategy by using an email marketing agency to assist in increasing the frequency of business with existing customer while simultaneously reaching out to potential customers for a relatively low cost. Email marketing has low overhead as it is digital and thus this marketing strategy can be quite effective when cost controls are important.

Implementing a Sales and Marketing Strategy

Implementing your sales and marketing strategy is obviously the most important part of the process. Even if you do significant research into the forecasted economic conditions and identify the most effective course of action to remain or achieve profitability and maintain positive cash flow, all of your research and planning is all for not if you don't successfully implement the plan and follow your determined sales and marketing strategy.

If you have chosen to implement an email marketing campaign governed by permission based marketing then you will have to setup an efficient mechanism for current customers or potential customers to opt-in to your plan. Your sales and marketing strategy hinges on developing an email list of current and potential customers and until this list is developed your sales and marketing strategy will fall short. These opt-in lists can be developed in a number of ways but most effectively they are generated at point of sale. By giving your customers a way to opt in to email communication you can then market to them at a later date as a form of customer retention.

If you choose to implement a different sales and marketing strategy which hinges on different factors such as reaching out to new customers or improving your business recognition in the community obviously different steps should be taken. Developing brand recognition requires you to reach out to new markets which are untapped. This can be done by allocating a portion of your time or marketing budget to creating an awareness in a new community.

If you have a web presence this may entail branching into search engine marketing with better SEO procedures. This can bring your brand to new people based on creating a wider online presence. In the physical world this may entail seeking new markets which might not know of your business but would relate to it. Promotions and local PR campaigns can help in reaching these customers. Charity events are other good ways of jump starting a sales and marketing strategy aimed at reaching new markets.

Importance of Following Your Sales and Marketing Strategy

A well defined and planned out sales and marketing strategy is something that won't ever work out however, unless you stick to it. Constant analysis and revision to the plan is actually detrimental to your success and the plans efficiency. The whole point of creating a defined sales and marketing strategy is to guide your business in the direction of success and constant revision to the process is like walking a crooked path to your final destination. If you deviate from your sales and marketing strategy and change the plan too often you end up wasting the efficiencies that were built into the plan in the first place.

Designing a plan that aims to retain current customers only to be revised to reach out to new customers is neither efficient nor helpful because all efforts spent on the first plan are not supported with continued efforts. Likewise when you jump ship on your sales and marketing strategy and take up another goal the new plan is like starting from scratch all over again. The problem is then compounded when the sales and marketing strategy is revised yet again. It is vastly important to be very calculated when setting your original goals and it is equally important to stick to your plan unless something obvious points you in another direct.

As previously stated defining a specific goal is the best thing you can do as a business owner. Once you have that goal identified you can then plan the best course of action to achieve that goal. Because goals and economic conditions are what they are, developing a sales and marketing strategy to work with the specific circumstances surrounding your business outlook is the best way to progress towards financial prosperity. Set your set and marketing strategy deliberately and carefully and then stick to it. In the end your business will be stronger for it.

Your sales strategy has to be able to weather all economic environments - that's what we're all learning in this recession.
