Although sapphire jewelry has adorned royalty since times past, it is not only the wealthy that are limited to owning sapphire jewelry.

The gem is the result of a combination of aluminum and oxygen. Sapphire is akin to the gemstone iolite. Sapphire possesses an incredible hardness which enables sapphire jewelry to stand the test of time. However, if it is not sufficiently cared for, the gemstone can still become damaged.

Sapphire is a symbol of genuineness, sincerity, intelligence and loyalty. In times past, the star sapphire was regarded as a talisman of supreme power. Sapphire was originally credited to relieve afflictions of the eye. The gemstone is alleged to embody the powers of Saturn.

The gemstone is frequently set into jewelry. Sapphire is therefore commonly incorporated into rings, brooches, necklets and earrings. It has commonly been incorporated into Britain's Crown Jewels. Since sapphire symbolizes earnestness and devotion, sapphire rings make popular engagement rings. Furthermore, sapphire is associated with the celebration of forty-five years of marriage and it is traditionally associated with September birthdays.

Sapphires are traditionally shaped into ovals and cushions. Sapphires which are round in shape prove well accepted however their preparation is more sophisticated and as a result, round sapphires present a greater expense.

Although it is available in all colors apart from red, sapphire is typically associated with shades of blue which range from the very pale through to the very rich. The most intense variety of blue sapphire is referred to as "Kashmir". Trace quantities of elements like iron or chromium can alter its color. Inclusion of minute rutile needles causes the gemstone to display asterism. Gems which exhibit this quality are referred to as star sapphires. The Sinhalese were of the belief that star sapphires could shield them from witchcraft.

Significant deposits of this gemstone are located in Australia and Thailand to name just two. However, the most abundant manufacturer of sapphire is Madagascar. A rare form of sapphire called Padparadscha derives from Sri Lanka. This highly valued variety is medium toned and typically orange to pink in color. Pink sapphires are equally esteemed. As their name may suggest, these gems are bright pink in color.

To enhance sapphire's color, heat treatment can be adopted. Untreated stones are much rarer than treated sapphires. However they also prove more expensive. Synthetic sapphire also exists. Naturally, synthetic sapphire jewelry is less expensive then jewelry which incorporates the natural form of the gemstone.
