Christmas Decorations and Gift Ideas

Lollie Christmas Trees

It is becoming harder every year to come up with new and inventive ways to make our money go further. Each year more people are using crafts and home cooking ideas to stretch their dollar further.

Make your own Christmas cards
This is something you can do with the kids. Not only will it keep them amused, it will give them the satisfaction of creating something themselves.

Instructions-Cut a sheet of colored cardboard in half, then fold each piece in half again. Decorate it with anything at all, from feathers, wool, cut out pictures, crayons, marking pens, glitter, various types of rubber stamps, sequins, and colored ribbons, pictures from old cards, and photos.

Print cards up on your computer. There are pre designed ones to use from the internet. Whichever ideas you use have fun with the kids making them.
Make your own Christmas tree

Ideas for making your own Christmas tree- The next time you prune one of your shrubs, keep a good-sized branch. Let It stand and dry out, then using a spray can of silver paint (choose your own color) paint the branches and the leaves. Find some honky nuts or pine cones and attach them . Paint these a different color or leave natural.

Stand in a pot of sand. Wrap Christmas paper around the base, and decorate in the normal way. You could make another one and use it to display your Christmas cards on.

Make a tree from papered sweets. You would need a polystyrene cone, paper pins, and many different sweets. The blue and pink columbines look good mixed with a Christmas mix. Start at the top and pin one end of the paper to the top of the cone. Work your way down to the base. Place this in a round dish of your choice. You can glue a stick into the polystyrene and stand that in a small planter pot. The base would need to be heavy enough to take the weight of tree, or it will topple over.

Decoration Ideas

Cut out stars in silver or gold paper for treetops. Use streamers to make chains, this will keep the kids out of mischief. Cut paper into 9' lengths and glue ends of one together, now thread the next piece through it and glue the ends. Continue until required length.

Place a paper doily over an old jar and spray paint over it. You can use red and green and do a couple of different shaped jars. Fill these with fresh flowers or give one to the grandparents as a gift. You could also paint your own pattern over a jar.
Make red and green bows out of Christmas ribbon and pin to the curtains.
Wrap up small little boxes with colored or Christmas paper and hang in tree or off your paper chains.

Cooking ideas as gifts
Make gingerbread men, fruit mince pies, or an ice cream cake. Wrap in colored paper and give to friend. (Not the ice cream cake)
Fruit and nut mix. Buy a variety of mixed (shelled) nuts and a packet of mixed fruit. Mix and put in sealed jars or tins. Decorate the tins, seal the top of jars with greased paper, and cover, with a piece of Christmas material, and tie with ribbon.

Pickles and relishes
Make these from recipe books and decorate same as above.
White Christmas is another simple gift idea. Some people would love marshmallows or glazed fruit.

Sugar and Spiced nuts

  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 3 cups walnut halves
  • 2 cups pecan halves
  • 1 cup whole un-blanched almonds
  • 3 egg whites
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice

Beat egg whites and water until frothy in a mixing bowl. Add nuts and stir to coat them. Combine all ingredients together and add to the mixture of nuts and gently stir to coat.

Spread out into two greased baking tins at least 12x12". Bake in uncovered in oven at 300degrees. For about 20-25 minutes or until browned stirring frequently. Cool and store in an airtight container. Everyone will love those that's for sure.

If you are not on a diet, why not buy some chocolate moulds and create the ideal little chocolates. No one could resist that gift. The idea is to buy various shaped moulds. Then using your imagination, make a variety with different centers. Try an almond, a piece of ginger, glazed fruit or anything at all. You can make these with normal chocolate, dark, and milk chocolate. Have fun making these and do not eat them all yourself.

Handcraft ideas
Sew, Crotchet or knit an article. Most people would love a new Doily, tablecloth, or apron. Type of gifts would depend on which country you are celebrating and the kind of weather.
