As wisdom teeth grow bigger, they will push on the gums and neighboring teeth causing pain. Other teeth may become impacted because of the wisdom tooth pushing on them. Your new wisdom teeth will form painful pockets in the gums that can lead to infection.

They have a tendency to force their way out of the gums irregularly. If the gum area around the infected wisdom tooth is swollen, then you will need antibiotics or anti-inflammatory pain relievers. The dentist cannot extract the tooth until the swelling has gone down.
