Scooby Doo

Scooby Doo has been around in some form or another since the TV show, "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?" was first released in 1969. However, there's lots of Scooby Doo information you may not have known. Lots of interesting trivia and fun facts surround the show and characters.

  • The show "Moby Dick and the Mighty Mightor" gets credit for Scooby Doo's name. There was a character on the show called Scooby the Seal, voiced by Don Messnick. Hanna-Barbera used the name of the seal and Don Messnick's voice to create the character of Scooby.
  • Some of the most interesting Scooby Doo information regarding Scooby is that Scooby was almost a sheep dog. The creators of the show were fearful that making him a Great Dane would seem like they were copying the popular comic strip "Marmaduke," but in the end they decided to leave him as a Great Dane, and thank goodness for that!
  • Shaggy is the only human character in the show to be in all Scooby Doo episodes.
  • Casey Kasem, who does the voice of Shaggy, became a vegetarian before the second season aired in 1970. He insisted the Shaggy become a vegetarian as well. Because of this, Shaggy is frequently seen eating vegetarian bologna and other meats.
  • Some little known Scooby Doo information is that there were rumors going around that "Scooby Snacks" were actually drugs, and that Shaggy, being the hippy that he was, was always high because he ate the Scooby Snacks. The shows creators have bashed this rumor.
  • Velma is frequently in scenes with just herself, Scooby, and Shaggy. This is because Fred and Daphne have always been thought of as the "boring characters" and the creators wanted most of the show to focus on the other three in all Scooby Doo episodes.
  • Some people seem to think that Velma is a lesbian and has a crush on Daphne. The creators have said this is not true. Velma does have a boyfriend; he just isn't part of the Scooby gang.
  • In much the same way that Kenny dies in every episode of South Park, Velma always loses her glasses in all Scooby Doo episodes.
  • The character of Daphne was loosely based on the character of Thalia Menninger on the show "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."
  • Daphne's dad is rich and helped pay for the Mystery Machine.
  • She came in 9th place on Maxim magazine's list of Hottest Cartoon Babes.
  • Daphne is considered one of the "boring" characters, which is why there isn't much Scooby Doo information concerning her, and why she isn't in as many scenes as the rest of the gang.
  • He was named after Fred Silverman, a CBS Executive
  • Geoff and Ronnie were two names considered for Fred before it was decided he would be called Fred.
  • Freddie Prinze, Junior played Fred in the Scooby movie. Ironically, Freddie Prinze is married to Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed Daphne in the Scooby movie.
  • Like Daphne, not much Scooby Doo information is known about Fred. His character was never very fleshed out.
