Secondary Responses Of Liposuction
Many consider liposuction as a safe procedure that leaves little room for side effects. Though temporary and non-lethal, the liposuction procedures can leave negative secondary responses, the presence of which can, however, be distressing. Whatever the problem arises, it is mainly on account of the inadequate post-surgery clean-up followed by the surgeon.
The most widely seen after effects of liposuction is the discoloration of the skin that gets formed when the damaged blood vessels during the procedure leaves behind a pool of blood beneath the skin that is not properly sucked out. These result in the formation of dark spots that are known as hematomas and seromas. A thorough drainage of the area can eliminate the scope for hematomas and seromas. However, the discoloration is temporary and may last for a period of few months to several years depending on the severity of damage caused.
Another side effect that is known to last for a longer period is the skin irregularities formed when too much of fat cells gets eliminated from an area at a time, leaving it lumpy and uneven. Spreading out of liposuction over several sessions can avoid the chances for skin irregularities.
The improper drainage of fluids from the treated cells can result in the swelling of the lower parts of the body, especially the feet and ankles. Through the simple principle of gravity, the fluid flows to the lower areas, resulting in swollen feet. Though a temporary condition, it can be distressing for the patient who is going through the recovery process.
Other complications arise out of the employment of anesthesia and specific chemicals contained in it. For example, epinephrine is known to elevate the heart rate of the patient during the procedure that can continue even after surgery until the medication wears off. The doctors request the patients to start avoiding caffeine and drugs containing epinephrine like cold medications a few days before the actual day of liposuction to avoid complications.
As many of the liposuction side effects are on account of the inadequate method of drainage of fluids followed during the procedure, laser liposuction is gaining momentum over the years. The smaller incision and the lower quantity of local anesthesia used in the process reduces the chances for negative secondary responses.
