Selecting Candle Wall Sconces
When it comes to considering wall sconces, you have to consider a pretty big chapter of human history. We have been using wall sconces almost as long as we have been using light. Anthropologists have determined that prehistoric people were using the equivalent of the wall sconce in their caves - they simply stuck a flaming torch or candle into a crack in the wall. After it was jammed in good and tight, they had two hands free that they could then use to tend to other business - skinning meat and sharpening tools.
Of course, you aren't exactly aiming for that kind of simplicity. You've got something a bit more classy in mind. But the truth is, the essential design and function of wall sconces hasn't changed much in the past thousand years or so. It doesn't matter if we're talking about natural candles or perhaps hurricane lamps or even a sconce that holds a dozen electric candles. The objective has always been to create a delightful ambiance in one's home - a goal that is both practical and aesthetic in nature.
As a general rule, the higher the sconce is placed, the more light is going to flow around the room. In this regard, the wall sconces tends to be a bit more effective than either table or floor lamps. Because of this - the space they free up by replacing those standalone sources of light - they are ideal for cramped quarters. Of course you can still use them in a big living room. But they are at their best in hallways or bathrooms, for example.
The candle sconce can be purchased in an almost unlimited variety of designs and styles. If you are looking for the perfect one, then you should probably start that search by figuring out the interior design or decor of your home. In other words, you want to match the sconce to the rest of the house. So if you have a Colonial American interior, then you probably something of wrought iron. Is there a lot of brass in your home? No problem! You can find a wall sconce that will work for you. Take your time and be sure you know what's right for you.
When you get right down to it, the most important question to answer is what type of sconce will best meet your particular needs. In other words, you want one kind of light fixture for a room in which you'll be hosting dinner parties than one in which you'll be doing nothing but quietly reading a book. There are bulbs with low wattage that will serve one function but entirely miss the boat on another.
Once you have the right sconce - the right design and the right one for the room - then you have to be sure that you place it correctly. Don't install it too low or you'll cut down on the light it can cast. Don't lock it into a corner, either. Be sure that you put it where it's going to do the most it can for your home.
If all the foregoing sounds like more of a hassle than you care to deal with, don't be afraid to talk to a qualified lighting expert. Remember, the general rules of purchasing and installing candle wall sconces are easily broken - and sometimes it's the breaking that makes them truly wonderful. Be sure you talk to your electrician as well - you don't want to create any safety hazards. Finally, an interior decorator can always offer some helpful tips that will allow you to reap the greatest reward from you new wall sconce.
