Selecting a Computer Monitor

By Edited Jul 19, 2016 0 0

While browsing through different brands at different prices, there is a lot to consider when selecting a computer monitor.  Some of the factors include size, refresh rate, native resolution and more.  I’d like to share with you some basic considerations and ideas to help you make and educated decision when choosing an LCD monitor for your pc.

ASUS VS228H-P 21.5-Inch Full-HD LED Monitor (Black)

Screen Size

This comes first in the factors because it is the most obvious consideration.  Screen size is measured diagonally across the monitor from one corner to the other.  There is a huge difference between a 17 inch and a 27 inch display; 10 inches to be exact.  If you are someone who does a lot of work on your computer with many windows open at a time, going with a bigger size is definitely a good choice.  It is nice being able to display multiple windows side by side in a decent proportion.  Gamers also desire the bigger screen during their questing through Azeroth and the like.

Refresh Rate

This element refers to how fast the graphics are drawn or refreshed to the screen.  Typically higher is better.  If you plan on operating your computer for long periods of time, then you want to opt for a higher refresh rate.  Lower rates may cause noticeable flickering and will quickly make your eyes hurt.  Some common refresh rates are 60, 70 and 120 Hz.

Resolution

When selecting a computer monitor, supported resolution is important.  There are many different resolutions which are typically measured by number A x number B.  An example is 1280x720.  Multiplying this number together gives you the total number of pixels that the display input, your computer, can recognize and use.  Therefore, higher resolutions will be more defined.   1920x1080 is considered high definition in terms of monitor displays. Basically the higher you can go the better the details will be.

Power Savings Features

Many LCD monitors on the market have features that allow you to reduce the monitor’s energy use.  They offer a setting or a mode in which the screen may operate at a lower brightness or reduce some other aspect to save energy and prolong its life as well.  These features supposedly help you save a bit of money as well since there is less energy being used.

Input Ports

In order to use your monitor with your pc, both must support the same cabling.  If your pc only has an HDMI port on it, then you would likely have to get a monitor with an HDMI port.  Although, there are many converters out there such as a VGA-to-DVI converter in case you need to switch between the two.

Warranty

This is a very important thing to consider.  Different companies offer different warranties.  If you have a good warranty, you don’t have to worry as much about your screen going out or something else going wrong.  Make sure to review them well.

Other Factors to Consider When Selecting a Computer Monitor

The previously mentioned aspects are not the only ones to consider.  There are other things such contrast ratio and seek time, though I will not cover these more advanced concepts here.

These aforementioned features are some of the most important things to consider when buying.  Hopefully you will now feel more confident and knowledgeable when selecting a computer monitor.
