Spiritual Adoption

Romans 8:14-17

Romans 8:14-17 – 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father.  16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:  17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together

Reasons People Adopt

  1. Can’t have kids of their own

  2. Love kids and want to help them and provide for them.

    1. The reason God adopts us.
      1. John 3:16 – 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Personal Characteristics Needed to Adopt

  1. Ability to commit

    1. God will not forsake us
      1. Hebrews 13:5 – 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
  2. Patience and perseverance

    1. God is longsuffering
      1. 2 Peter 3:9 – 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
  3. A love of children

    1. God loves us all more than we can possibly imagine
  4. The strength to be consistent and set limits

    1. God’s word is unchanging
    2. The Bible shows us the limits that God has set for us.

Adoption Process (things that will have to be done)

  1. Select a child

    1. Decide what race, age, special needs, etc.
    2. God has selected all people
      1. Acts 17:30 – 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at but now commandeth all men every where to repen
      2. Romans 2:11 – 11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
  2. Prepare for the child’s arrival

    1. Make the house child friendly
    2. God has designed the Church to be a friendly, caring, loving environment if we are living the way we should and make it that way
    3. We also have a place prepared in Heaven
      1. John 14:2 – 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
  3. Ways to cover adoption expenses (it can be costly $0 – $5,000 - $10,000+)

    1. Loans, subsidies, tax credits, employer assistance, etc.
    2. God paid for us through the death of his son (WAY more costly)
      1. 1 Corinthians 6:20 – 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
      2. John 3:16 – 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
  4. Be prepared to wait

    1. The process can take awhile, few months to year +
    2. God is longsuffering
  5. The Home Study

    1. Evaluation of the family and the physical and emotional environment where the child will be placed.
    2. Questions about income and assets, can you provide for the child.
      1. God owns everything, knows our needs, and can provide
        1. Matthew 6:25-26 – 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
    3. Why do you want to adop
      1. God wants to save all people and have none perish.
    4. How will the family treat the new child, what’s the home like
      1. The church should foster growth and development
      2. It’s up to us to show the new Christian love, acceptance, warmth, care, etc.
        1. Should continue with each other at all time
        2. Too often we fail in this
    5. How do you plan to discipline the child
      1. God has given us his rule book
      2. We know the consequences of disobedience:  disownmen
        1. Matthew 7:21-23 – 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
    6. Is your schedule flexible enough to raise a child, will you be there when they need you
      1. God is all knowing, even the thoughts and intents of the hear
      2. We can speak to him through prayer at any time.

      2. 1 Peter 1:3-4 – 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, {abundant: Gr. much}  4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, {for you: or, for us}

Being a Child (obligations and benefits)

  1. Obedience

    1. I John 2:3-5 – 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.  4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
  2. Love received

    1. John 14:18, 21 – 18  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. {comfortless: or, orphans}  21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
    2. John 16:27 – 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
  3. Advice

    1. Can read God’s word and find out what to do.
  4. Blessings/gifts

    1. Look at what we’re granted each day.
  5. Acceptance

    1. Isaiah 56:3-8 – 3  Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak saying The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say Behold, I am a dry tree.  4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;  5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off  6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;  7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.  8 The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him. {beside...: Heb. to his gathered
  6. Inheritance

    1. Galatians 3:29 - 4:7 – 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.  Galatians 4 1  Now I say That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;  2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.  3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: {elements: or, rudiments}  4 But when the fulness of the time was come God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,  5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.  6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying Abba, Father.  7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Children’s Problems (sometimes adopted children may exhibit some of these)

  1. Attention deficits

    1. Sometimes we can even pay attention to a whole lesson
    2. We may forget about God outside of Church and not attend to living for him
  2. Defiance

    1. Sometimes we seem to think we have a better way
    2. We don’t like to be told what to do
  3. Impulsiveness

    1. We may not think before we act
    2. May be influenced by friends to do something on a whim
  4. Lying

    1. We may try to deceive others and even ourselves to thinking we’re living right
    2. Can’t deceive God

Conclusion

  1. We have to want to be adopted

  2. Need to learn to be proper children of God and accept the adoption
