So, you've made the decision to branch out on your own? If you are going to set up your very own law firm and do it successfully, you are going to need to know the steps involved and develop a plan. Below you will find the several steps you need to go through to successfully set up your own law practices.

1. Develop a Business Plan

You need a business plan. Without it you won't be prepared for not only the expected things but also the unexpected. In developing your plan you need to talk to the bank, recruitment firms and insurance brokers. Talk to as many people as you can and leave no stone unturned.

2. Choose a Name

This is actually very simple. The name of the law firm will be yours. If you are going into business with another person, you're going to have to have an argument about who's name goes first!

3. Choose a Location

You will need to find a location that both clients and staff can get to easily. You have a number of option here. You can start from home and this is a very cheap option. You could hire a section of an executive suite and use their resources on an as is basis. You could also establish an office in another law firm's office which will enable you to use their resources like the library and phones. The last option of course, is to have your own office and staff.

4. Set up your office

This means moving in your office furniture and computers. You will need to have some sought of reception area with reception area chairs. There are a wide range of waiting room chairs that you can buy that suit any situation. Beyond that, there is a reception desk and decorative paintings and pot plants. Your office will need at least a desk, a computer and book shelves.

5. Staff and Insurance

If you are planning on having a busy law practice then you will need staff to answer the phone and assist you in your work. You should be advertising early for you positions so that when you being your staff are ready to work too. Choosing insurance can be confusing and so many people often choose to use an insurance broker. They can often get you a good deal and explain to you all the confusing jargon.

6. Marketing

Without some type of marketing you are unlikely going to get any clients. Do get your name out there, you need to talk to as many people as possible. In addition, you should get a list of contact and send out your new details and information. A good idea is to write a press release for the launch and you may find it gets picked up by the local media.
