Setting up your Workspace with a Modern Office Desk
A desk is a functional piece of equipment that is typically used for working. This means it is commonly found in company or home offices. As with most things, the desk has evolved to cope with the demands of the modern world and there are a few factors which have had an influence on its design. The computer has probably resulted in the biggest changes in desk design, although health and ergonomics have also had an impact.
Modern desks can be fashioned of various materials. While wood is still one of the most common, when used on its own this tends to result in a more traditional style. However in combination with materials such as stainless steel and chrome frames it can have a contemporary feel. A hardened glass or plastic tabletop can also help to provide a more modern look for a desk.
In the modern world the desk style has had to adapt for use with a computer. This has resulted in the addition of features such as keyboard trays and a space for a CPU unit. Additional shelving has been added either below or above the desktop which is used for computer accessories. Cut out holes are also common on most modern desks to accommodate the wiring of electrical equipment.
Many people now spend many working hours at a desk. Setting up a modern work desk and chair for a healthy posture is therefore considered important. Ergonomics is the name given to this practice and it has had an influence on desk design. Many modern ergonomic desks can be mechanically adjusted to increase user comfort and efficiency no matter who is using the desk.
While a desk for drawing is less common in modern offices there are many people who still like using these. Much technical and graphics drawing work can be done by computers and this has reduced the need for drawing desks. However modern drawing desks are still widely available and can be a useful asset in an office. They provide a large worktop for laying out and viewing drawings as well as the opportunity to work on these.
Utilizing the space in an office well is the aim of office managers. Modern office desks can therefore include corner desks. These take up an area that in many offices can be left unused and for this reason can be a good idea. Corner desks are available in a number of styles and this includes computer, writing and telephone desks.
If you are looking to bring a contemporary style to an office, a modern reception desk is something to consider. This is the first area most people will see and therefore needs to be set up well. Modern reception desks tend to move away from the traditional rectangular wooden desk. Semi circular or more flowing shapes using glass, plastic and polished metals can provide a contemporary feel.
The use of portable desks is a modern concept which is built around the use of portable PCs. Laptop carts, which basically comprise a small tabletop on a wheeled base can be a good idea if you work with a netbook, notebook or tablet PC. These can be located in any suitable area in a room and take up little space. Having a few available can therefore be a good option in a modern office.
