Seven Steps to Optimism

Humans can be divided in two groups: optimists and pessimists. If optimism and pessimism are heritability is not sure. I guess it's a combination of heritability (intelligence, temperament) and environmental factors (history of negative incidents). It's also suggested that health maybe a factor. Question is: can a pessimist become an optimist? The power of positive thinking?

The Pessimist

Pessimism is derived from the Latin word pessimus which means 'worst'. The pessimist perceives life negatively. The pessimist thinks our world is the worst possible world of al existing worlds. A pessimist is somebody sees problems when opportunity arrives. Often they became pessimists by incidents in their past. They became bitter and this develops a certain way of thinking. The pessimist becomes frustrated, angry, disappointed and somber. Pessimists also think badly about themselves. This can lead to depression and sometimes they even become suicidal.

The Optimist

The optimist is a person with a positive outlook on life. Optimism is derived from the Latin word optimum which means 'best'. While the pessimist thinks his glass is half empty,the optimist thinks his glass in half full. They believe our world is the best of all possible worlds. The optimist expects the best possible outcome from any given situation. They believe when bad things happen all will end well. The optimist has a lot of self-esteem, is confident and is most of the time a happy person.

Seven steps to become an optimist

Can a pessimist become an optimist? I think it can be done. But to turn the mind in positive thinking al lot of work has to be done. Pessimism doesn't change overnight. Here are some guidelines:

  1. When negative thoughts enter your mind try to replace them with positive. Be aware that they may come back.
  2. Keep looking for beneficial, good and happy thoughts
  3. When bad things happen try to find the positive side, they are always there.
  4. Accept who you are
  5. Try to be confident
  6. Look at yourself. You are valuable!
  7. Enjoy life. You have only one chance.
