Before I begin, let me just say that I've been a die hard fan of the show "Psych" almost since it first started and I've watched and own every episode to date on dvd at my home. This show was awesome if you loved eighties like I do and if you liked shows such as "Monk" which I also do. I became a big fan of pretty much all the regular cast and a lot of the guest stars. Probably my favorite is still Cary Elwes. So, thats what makes it hard for me now.
This is a show where the cast seemed truly greatful for it's following, for it's fans. These people went to comic con and did little things like shorts online and facebook anouncements and a bunch of things that are good from a PR perspective, but also maybe worked a little too well and fooled people like me into thinking that they and in fact the creators of the show actually cared about the fans. I don't think that's the case anymore. If you've seen the end of season six, this won't surprise you any and if you haven't, you may not want to read what I'm about to say........................ Henry, Shawn's dad is left, shot in the chest and on the ground, at the end of the season. We don't know if he's alive or dead at this point. This makes this easily the biggest cliff hanger the show has ever seen between seasons. now, that in and of itself is no reason to drop this show.
What may be is the fact that they aired that episode on April eleventh 2012. Then, the original promos for the seventh season said the show was coming back in October. Now, that's already longer and later in the year than what had previously been normal for the show. But that could just be USA network's scheduling. What is really upsetting though is that once we got to I think it was around the end of September, they stopped airing the previously mentioned promos. In fact, I don't think they were airing any at all. At some point, we were told the show was now coming back in February. I could have sworn it originally said early February, but I could be wrong on that one. At any rate, its now scheduled for February 27th as I understand it. The thing that burns me up the most is that in all this time and even checking Google, the Psych fanpage, and any other source I could find, I have NEVER gotten an answer as to why it has taken this long to get the show back on the air. For those of you keeping track, that's April 11 to February 27. That's roughly ten and a half months between the end of one season and the start of the next.
Add to all that again that we've got a huge cliffhanger and that nobody from the show has apparently given any explanation for all this. To me, that says they don't care and its just a really long time to wait anyhow. To be honest, the last few seasons of this show have been really hit and miss from one episode to the next too. Its not as consistently good as it was in the first two to three seasons. The focus has gotten away from Shawn, his abilities, and his relationship with his dad to focus on other cast members and whatever gimick the episode of the week is featuring and really those things I mentioned before were what made this show great. That's another reason why Henry's so important and it feels like a slap in the face to be made to wait this long to see what happens to him. Don't get me wrong. There were some great episodes last season and I do like some of the developments in the show like Lassie getting a girlfriend and Shawn and Juliet moving forward in their relationship, but you can't lose sight of the core of the show.
Maybe this show will just be pure awesome this season, completely redeem itself, and make it impossible for me to drop it. We can hope it'll be great certainly. And I already promised my wife I'd at least watch the first episode of the season just to see what happened to Henry. But for the first time since I started watching the show, I'm not excited about it anymore. And I'm not sure if I really want to see the whole season. I do know that if Henry dies, I'm done watching it. This isn't supposed to be a super dramatic show and that would just ruin so many of the things that made this show great. Either way, you can expect to see my revioew of that first episode to season seven after it airs Wednesday. At least one more time, I'll see if I can find the pineapple.
