Should You Buy A Touch Screen Laptop?

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

WinTouch 18.5" Touch Screen Kit(75947)
Is a touch screen laptop the right choice for you?

Certainly any of the advanced notebook or touch screen laptops hold a fascination for anyone who uses their computer for work or entertainment. Each time you use an ATM machine which receives commands with the mere touch of a finger you may wonder how this technology could enhance your your laptop or PC.

Both the touch screen laptop computer and the touch screen TV are beginning to get a lot of attention as the technology advances to the point where the cost is low enough and there are lots of choices available to create a large market.

Certainly those who are in the graphics field realize the potential of easily moving images around the screen with just the touch of a finger or stylus. Serious video gamers feel more personal involvement with their games when they can give commands with a mere touch to the screen instead of mouse movements.

Great Technology For Artists

Anyone with an artistic bent would appreciate the ability to write in their own handwriting on a touch screen producing personal documents not possible with page after page of text. Imagine the personal effect of handwritten emails.

Those who have not mastered the keyboard will enjoy the freedom of simply writing in long hand. Some authors are not comfortable using voice to text technology and find they can be more productive and creative when writing in longhand.

There is no doubt that the future of the touch screen laptops or PC is assured. However the decision to purchase one of these computers is not quite as simple as purchasing a typical laptop or notepad.

First the purchase price of the more advanced model desktop and laptop can easily be over a thousand dollars. There are good choices starting at around $300.

The Right Purchase Will Require Some Research

We discovered as we reviewed customer comments for the touch screen laptop computer that it is not easy to find 4 or 5 star customer reviews for these laptops. While those who have purchased a touch touch screen laptop are pleased with the advanced functionality they have described what they feel are short comings in the presently available models.

If you are considering one of these machines you would do well to spend some time at Amazon reviewing customer comments before making your final decision.

Some of the most common complaints are these:

Many models are supplied with Windows 7 basic which they find they need to upgrade to get all the power they need. This is something you need to consider because it will of course add additional cost.

Some models have built in batteries and because the useable battery life before a recharge is about 3 hours they would like to have the option of using a spare battery to extend the useable time when AC is not available.

While not a serious problem some owners have mentioned that the screen will receive lots of fingerprints if a stylus is not used.

Users who spend time with iPods seem to be disappointed with what they call sluggish response to finger commands on their touch screen computer.

To offer a sample of the touch screen machines presently available starting at around $400 which is an average for a good laptop, we are including a few of the present offerings listed on Amazon. We also include reviews of an adapter which can be used to turn a regular laptop or PC monitor into a touch screen application.

Awesome little machine, February 14, 2011
By Dan A. (Malden, MA, USA)

I got this a week ago and have been playing with it nonstop since.

There are three things you need to be aware of when purchasing this:

1) The screen is even smaller than on most netbooks because of the flip design. The
versatility more than makes up for it though.

2) The battery is not removable and is good for about 3 hours.

3) Windows 7 Home Premium only likes to view drives on other machines running
Windows 7. My home PC was running Vista. It could look at and access the drives on
the Duo; but the Dou will only look at drives in it's Homegroup. Only Windows 7
supports homegroups. I upgraded my desktop to Windows 7 Home Premium and now they
network amazingly well. Setup was a snap.

It actually works!, July 27, 2010
By T. Robinson (Phoenix, AZ)
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I was looking for an affordable way to add touch capability to my lap top. As a
home inspector, I use a checklist style of reporting software that requires me to
click a box here, check a box there, & then over and over again. My mouse is just
too slow. While looking for an affordable alternative to the expensive tablet PCs I
came across this little known solution.

Just OK, September 17, 2010
By Lious Friend "Credo ut intelligam" (Georgetown, Texas)

Works as advertised. I thought it was a really good deal, and it is. If you have
the right size screen then this is by far the best option versus a $400 touch

1) make sure you have a screen that it will fit exactly on. If it's too big or small it will not work as well.
2) Seems a little buggy. Only works with the main display. Can't use it on the second display, as far as I know. So you have to make sure that the screen you want to use is your main display (which can be changed easily in windows so don't worry, it's just annoying).

So there you have it. The good, and the not so good about the touch screen laptop computers. Certainly this touch screen technology deserves your review if you have need for the touch screen application. Our only advice is be sure to spend some time at Amazon and other sources reviewing the available products and most important the customer reviews so you can make the right decision before your next purchase.
