Should You Get a Dust Mite Bedding?

Should you be purchasing a dust mite bedding for yourself? The answer is a resounding Yes! To understand why, we first need to know what dust mites are. Dust mites are basically very small spiders that are rounded, white and have an average life span of about 1 month. These parasites are so small that it is impossible to detect them with naked eye. To see a dust mite, you will need a basic microscope.

It is said that a typical dust mites bed or mattress can have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites inside! Research has also shown that up to 15% of the weight in a 2 years old pillow can be composed of dead mites and their waste. Dust mites love dead skin and some of the best repositories of dead skin are bed covers, blankets or anything made of cloth.

Dermatitis, asthma and rhinitis are thought to be common reactions to dust mite allergens. Young children said to run the risk of developing asthma if they sleep on a dust mite bed. Also, if you sleep on a mattress with lots of dust mites, you will notice red itchy bumps which are a result of your skin reacting to the dust mite allergens.

Doctors know the benefit of sleeping in an allergen-free environment which is why dust mite free bedding is such an important item to have for your family. While it is impossible to completely eliminate the dust mites, controlling them can reduce the risk of contracting health problems associated with dust mite infections. For a start, you can reduce the dust mites in your bedding by washing bedding such as bedcovers or blankets in hot water. However, the simplest way is to purchase anti dust mite bedding. Replacing your current bedding with dust mite bedding covers is the most cost effective way to control dust mites. Research shows that covering your mattress and pillows with dust mite bed cover or dust mite allergy bedding will provide an encasing to prevent any mite allergen from getting into the air you and your family breathe. Also, such special bedding will trap the mites inside the pillow or mattress and once blocked from their food source (your shed skin cells), the mites will eventually die.

Some examples of dust mites bedding you can purchase are dust mite covers, hypoallergenic pillows, allergy mattress covers, allergy pillow covers, bed bug proof covers, and dust mite treatment accessories. Also, to get rid of dust mites, you can purchase dehumidifiers. Dust mites thrive in high humidity conditions, but this can be controlled through de-humidifiers which can also remove dust mite allergens from the air.

To detect dust mites is the first step to controlling them. There are several commercial dust mite detection kits available. Most of these dust mite detection kits measure the presence of dust mite allergens based on samples collected from the entire home. Along with indicator chemical agents, these collected samples will provide indications about the infestation levels in the home.
