Should You Post Your Income Online When Making Money Online

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 1 2

There has been a debate on many forums over the last month or so whether it is in bad "form" to post your income from the ways that you are making money online. These debates have often gotten very heated and even caused some name calling. People are always passionate about their beliefs so any difference of opinion can result in this type of online bickering. This got me to thinking about whether it is really something that people only do because it is making money online and therefore not seen as a real job. Perhaps, online marketers post their income for other reasons and do not think about whether it is proper etiquette or not.
One of my favorite blogs, The Smart Passive Income Blog, has always posted a monthly run down income report. Honestly it has always been one of my favorite posts on the blog to read. For me, it has always given me hope and incentive to work harder at the ways that I am building a passive income. Making money online is something that takes patience and knowing someone has successfully done it always lights my fire to work harder. Then why do some think it is bad to do this?
Not Done Offline
The usual fight that comes from those that do not like people posting their income when they are making money online is that this would not be done in the offline world. That is to say that most people would not ask or even mention what their income is from their offline job. This is very true and something that I have never done. To be honest, most companies have very strict rules about talking about salaries that would result in immediate dismissal from the job. It is not worth it to take this type of risk in the offline world.
That is probably one of the reasons that many feel comfortable talking about making money online and their exact numbers. There is no boss or company with rules that you must follow or be fired. There are some websites that do not like you to discuss exact numbers if you write for them, but other then that there is no one holding people back from discussing the possibilities of making money online.
Another big issue that most people have with online income being discussed is that the numbers can easily be inflated. Yes, there are probably online marketers who are trying to sell something that will lie about what they are earning. Screenshots can be faked and numbers can lie. That is why the reader most always beware when reading about ways people are making money online. It is always best to read and find out what type of reputation the person has online before you believe the numbers.
Why Do It?
There are some people who post their earnings simply as a way to motivate themselves and track how they are doing. They will even come out and tell you this in their posts or articles. It may motivate you to find ways to increase earnings online, but that is not their main goal. This is very common with people who are just starting out making money online.
Some people post what they make as a way to prove that the method that they are using is legitimate and worth the time. This can be true of a course that they suggest that you sign up for or even a content web site like Info Barrel. Numbers often prove more to people then just telling them that there is a great opportunity in making money online.
Will You or Will I?
Will you ever disclose what you are making through your online ventures? That is a question that everyone who is making money online needs to answer for themselves. There is no one correct answer. There will always be people who applaud the truth that you tell and there will always be people who put you down for what you do. I for one will share some of income levels on my blog, Single Mom Freelance Writing. If not just to help motivate myself but to prove to others that this can work for them too.

Nice article, it's interesting how some people don't mind sharing how much they make, and other people guard it as if it were a government secret. Thanks for sharing your insight

I like to share mine because I also like seeing how much money other people are making and I use that as motivation.

Excellent Article Idea!
