If you have seen or smelled skunks on your property, you may have been wondering about how you would know if you are dealing with a rabid skunk. Although you can not tell if a skunk is rabid just by looking at it, there are some common signs of rabies you can look for.

Why can't you tell if a skunk is rabid by looking at it? The only way that you could be completely positive about a rabid skunk is after it is deceased. At that point, a professional would have to look at his brain to make a positive determination about rabies. Although some signs are common for a rabid skunk, signs and symptoms alone can not give you a guaranteed diagnosis.

Some of the common signs or indicators that you can look for include those listed below.

If the skunk is aggressive or has no fear of dogs or humans, it may be rabid. Rabid skunks will often lose their sense of fear. They will be aggressive and attempt to attack you and your dog. They have also been known to attack inanimate objects.

A rabid skunk will often walk like he is drunk. He will stagger and have difficulty staying upright while walking.

At times, you may see foam coming from it's mouth. You might see this or excessive saliva.

Although it is best to err on the safe side and avoid contact with skunks, these are some things you can look for to make an educated guess as to whether or not the skunk is carrying rabies. These are some of the most common signs of a rabid skunk.
