Approaches for Getting Rid of Acne

Healthy skin is an important aspect of outer beauty.  Unfortunately, attaining beautiful skin may seem like an uphill climb for those with acne blemishes.  Acne is perhaps the most common of all the various chronic skin conditions, and all too often finding an effective solution takes time. This article describes ideas for how you might get clear skin when everything you have tried hasn't worked. Because everyone's skin condition (and motivation to get clear skin) is different, results will vary. Hopefully, though, some of the approaches used either alone in combination will help you to get clear skin.

The Problem

Acne manifests in many ways.  Acne on areas of the skin visible to others like the face, neck, and chest, or even typically covered areas like the back can lead to embarrassment and low self-esteem.  You might have red scaly skin, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or even scars.[4810]  Here's a video on how acne develops and how it differs from a pimple:


Acne is most prevalent among older children and teens (usually caused by a surge in hormones),[4810] often exacerbating the difficulties of adolescence.  But, acne can last well into adulthood.

At a basic level, acne is caused when a skin follicle is blocked, and a number of factors such as hormonal changes, genetics, stress, bacteria, and diets are believed to contribute to acne.[4810] Given the variety of causes and the fact that skin experts do not necessarily know how a specific treatment will affect a specific individual, a trial-and-error approach is used.  Consequently, numerous products for treating acne abound. For acne-sufferers, however, the important question is how to get clear skin as quickly as possible with the least amount of side effects.

The usual first step for acne-sufferers is a visit to the dermatologist.  Depending on the type of acne you have, the dermatologist will prescribe medication such as Accutane or retinol products such as Retin-A .  Other medication might include gels, creams, or oral antibiotics.  For severe cases of acne, treatments such as dermabrasion, phototherapy, and surgery are also frequently used. [4810]

Alternatives to Prescription Acne Medication

If you have tried prescription acne medication with limited results or if you want to move to gentler, natural forms of acne treatment, consider exploring non-prescription medication.  Your medical doctor may cite a lack of evidence of the effectiveness of alternative treatments for getting clear skin.  However, based on the use and reviews of others, the following options might be worth a look and/or a try as you seek a smoother, clearer complexion.

Topical Treatments

Here are some tips and ideas involving items you put on your skin:

  • Topical acne treatments involve putting an acne product directly on your skin. Be careful not to "stack" treatments, especially if the treatment has an active ingredient such as retinol.

  • Keep your skin clean. Avoid touching your face.  Consider using over-the-counter, generic products like witch hazel -- a plant-based antioxidant and astringent used in many acne-treatments[4814] -- which can be helpful for cleaning the surface of the skin with a cotton pad. 

  • Skin care systems can sometimes help.  You might opt for an over-the-counter skin

  • Those who want to try a plant-based solution to acne should consider a newcomer to the skin care field.  Nerium AD, which is costs about $100 for a month's supply, is marketed primarily as an Age-defying treatment.   • Once you get your acne under control, pay attention to maintenance.  Always be gentle to your skin -- don't pick or scratch. The topical treatments suggested above address acne problems from "outside" the body. Likewise, good food choices help you get clear skin from the "inside" out.  Nutritionists suggest that the proper diet can help you in your efforts toward clear skin.

The methods mentioned above for getting smooth, clear skin tackle acne from both the inside of the body and the outside.   Some cost money, and some take time and effort. However, if you suffer from this chronic condition and are striving for clear, beautiful skin that you can see and feel, you might find success with some of these approaches a try.

Very interesting article. Changing ones diet will benefit so much more than your skin. You will see the differences on the inside as well as the outside.

Thanks for the great tips. This is a first I've heard of the aspirin remedy.
