Skylight Window Blinds Must-Have Features

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Many people who build or buy a home prefer to have those beautiful and elegant skylight windows, because they like to watch the starry sky at night. Skylight window blinds are an absolute requirement, if you want to enjoy also your days and not only the nights.

Only think of the hot summer rays falling directly onto your skylights and heating the air inside your room. You won't be too happy to spend your afternoon in such a room, or you'll simply spend too much on electricity to make the air conditioning unit cope with this temperature.

Because of the special position of skylights and roof windows, when buying blinds for them, you need to take care of a few things:

First of all, skylight window blinds need to have a much better thermal insulation than blinds or shades for common, vertical windows. A special double lining would solve this problem. Cellular or honeycomb shades are also a very good idea for covering skylights, because they have a good energy efficiency. You'll see the benefits not only during summer but also in winter, when the most part of the heat inside a room goes out through windows and doors. The glass surface is not an ideal insulator, that's why we need to have some additional protection if we want to keep our energy bills as low as possible.

Another issue with skylight windows is that they may be positioned in places that make them difficult to reach. This is why when buying skylight window coverings, be them blinds, shades or even shutters, we have to keep in mind that motorization is our best friend. Electric blinds for skylights look and feel just like ordinary ones, except from the cords which are missing, the blind being operated via a tubular motor which is hidden inside the top rail cassette. The motor can be either operated by remote control or wired, the wires being buried inside the walls and the switch looking just like the light switch we all know in our homes.

Last but not least, it's very important that the fabric skylight blinds are made from to be UV resistant, in order to preserve its color and its properties even after a hot summer, when the UV index can go as high as 10, therefore being destructive and dangerous with people and with items that are left in direct sunlight.

These are mainly the three characteristic of good skylight window blinds: thermal insulation, ease of operation and control and UV protection. The rest is all fun and games.
