Testing Skype
Skype for Android is finally available for download on Android Market from Google. Already present on Windows , Mac , Linux , iPhone, iPod touch, iPad , Windows Mobile , Symbian and Java phones, this new version of Skype Mobile aroused great interest among users of Android smartphones.
Android Skype allows free calls to Skype, using the instant messaging service, and also calling landline numbers locally and abroad with SkypeOut with the purchase or Skype Credit or a subscription membership. Supporting multitasking, you will be able to receive a call while the application is open or on standby. You will only notice the absence of videoconferencing and the option to send SMS. Technically, all options can work in both 3G and WiFi. However in practice, this will depend on both your service and conditions of use of your subscription. As for the terminals, the publisher announced the support for HTC and Motorola Smartphones, while reporting problems with the Acer Liquid and lack of support for the Samsung Galaxy S. Concerning the OS, the minimum requirement is Android 2.1. On Nexus One with Android 2.2.1, the result is just perfect.
Android Skype has an accessible interface, segmented into four tabs. The grip is the fastest, although there are some weaknesses in terms of ergonomics, especially for quick search of contacts. At first launch of the application, you will be offered to import the contacts on your phone or export your contact list and Skype numbers. You cannot perform synchronization. Via the first tab "Skype", it is possible to add a number or Skype contact. You will find your contact list and phone numbers on Skype. To recover your contacts, you should move your finger across the screen to display a scroll button fast. A quick search would have been better. On the other hand via the option "group" of "Menu" button, you will appreciate the ability to quickly sort the contacts by group: all those in line, only Skype contacts or phone numbers, those contacted recently and frozenc ontacts. To gain access to calling features and messaging, simply select a contact. Note the presence of a quick menu, staying supported and hold a contact to call, chat, view profile, add to favorites, block or delete it. The "Call" tab will allow you call a landline number or mobile phone locally or abroad with your SkypeOut credits or subscription. You can directly dial a number, and retrieve a contact via the phone book. Little more compared to the iPhone / iTouch, by clicking on the flag, you will have a menu to select the destination country. Extremely convenient for making international calls without knowing by heart the country code. During a call, you can activate the phone speaker, mute the microphone or save the conversation paused. Concerning "My Info" tab, you can quickly change status, change the avatar by taking a picture or by selecting an image on the phone, enter a message in the mood, change your Skype profile in detail, and view the subscription options and SkypeOut credits. By pressing "Menu", there is the Logout button and accessing the advanced settings. You can enable or disable the startup and automatic login, set preferences for notifications and privacy or configure call forwarding. As for the fun part, you can select an audio track in the music library on your phone to adopt it as your default ringtone. To conclude, with the Event tab, you will find the history of calls made, received, missed and the instant messaging conversations.
