Skype Pros and Cons

By Edited Apr 25, 2014 0 0

I just lately discovered Skype and I think it's the best application for video chatting. Skype is one of the least expensive VoIP providers available. You may question what “VoIP” is.  VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, or in more popular language, phone service over the internet. If you have a DSL connection, you can get phone service delivered via your internet rather than from a nearby telephone service.

PROS

Skype recognized for its free video chat and is excellent for folks on a budget. Skype provides TOTALLY FREE services along with paid services. You can make use of any web camera with Skype. It is terrific having the ability to see and be seen by your friends and family. With Skype you can easily make free calls to anybody who has Skype wherever they are.

You actually make phone calls using usernames instead of traditional telephone numbers.  An instant-messaging client (for texting) is included.  Skype is secure and does not carry adware or spyware. Skype’s’ text, voice and video abilities help to make it easy to share experiences with the people who make a difference to you. You can Skype on whatever you like-computer (download), phone and tablets (app) and TV with Skype on it. Skype also provides plans to call internationally at great prices and even unlimited minutes for a low flat fee.

Skype is simpler to set up than the majority of competitors with no hardware to install. Go to www.skype.com and download and install Skype and you’re all set to begin. It needs to be noted, you are restricted to using a mobile device (phone or tablet) or your computer to make calls.  At this point, there is no telephone adapter which enables you to change your normal phone into a VoIP phone. Skype's client base is at this time 250 million users around the world, and is adding around 150,000 more each day.

With Skype’s paid services you can enjoy even more for a very low fee each month.  A few of the "paid for" services are:

SkypeOut calling from Skype to landlines and cellular phones worldwide

Skypeln offers a real phone number so non-Skype customers can phone you. This is excellent for people who travel a lot.

Skype Voicemail is available for when you are away, or your computer is not on, or travelling. You will never miss another important call.

Conference calling.

Secure data file transferring.

CONS

Some critics’ issue is that Skype can work as a host for other individuals’ calls.  Skype can transfer their voice data by means of your computer en route to its destination. This will cause your bandwidth consumption to become high, but Skype’s software program is intended to keep the bandwidth use low. But, if you have a limitation on your usage you may want to keep close track on your usage when using Skype. Skype works by using P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to link you with other users. This is an essential part of Skype’s success.

Another con is security and safety concerns. Some critics feel the level of popularity of Skype will attract online hackers but Skype has taken care of that. Each and every call is encrypted and Skype has an excellent security track-record and only one vulnerability, which has recently been fixed.  Safety measures should constantly be essential to you whenever on the internet.  Always make certain your routine consists of a personal firewall, up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware, and frequent software patches, at the very least.

The level of quality of sound is not that good with a VoIP as with a landline or cellular phone.

Calls are sometimes dropped.

So I hope I have made it easier for you to make a decision considering Skype.  I've provided you with the pros and cons of utilizing this technology. I use it and have fun with free calls, text chatting, and free video calls to my family and friends all around the world.
