How to Tell if you have Sleep Disorder Symptoms

One of the easiest ways to tell that you are a sufferer - outside of an actual sleep disorder test - is to keep a bedtime sleep journal. You can consider this your own personal sleep disorders test and it can help you to better discuss with your doctor or physician if need be.

In your bedtime journal you would regularly document the following:

  • what time you lay down
  • what time you fall asleep
  • what time you woke up
  • how many times (and the actual time) your sleep was disturbed - excluding by outside causes such as cars, horns, loud noises etc
  • any medications taken prior to going to bed - both doctor prescribed and over the counter
  • any notable activities or moods that take place before lying down (jogging, work, argument - happy, sad, angry etc)

Sleep Disorder Test - What is the Sleeping Disorders Test Process

If your doctor feels that you truly suffer from a sleep disorder they may recommend that you take part in a sleep study or refer you to a sleep clinic.

A clinician will explain to you the procedure (which will be touched on below) and give your strict rules that you must adhere to prior to the sleep study. These often include rules about: medication, diet and activities.

When the test time comes you go into the clinic prepared often to spend the night and during your sleep disorder test you will be hooked up, by a technician, to machines and video that will monitor; breathing, heart rate, rapid eye movement (R.E.M), oxygen levels and possibly other physical activities that take place during your sleeping process.
