Sleep plays a vital role in a person’s health. Sometimes we tend to deprive ourselves of adequate and proper sleep without realizing that we are abusing our body by doing this. This is most common in young adults who have hectic schedules as they most often have to juggle between their busy work schedules and their active social life. This kind of lifestyle consequently exposes them to further stress which in turn causes sleep deprivation and sleep pattern disturbances.
While it is important to get the right amount of sleep every day, it is more important to have quality rest. Longer sleep does not equate better sleep. In fact, sleeping more than eight hours is not good either. A good night’s sleep of six to eight hours without disruption is the best form of rest to be had. Continuity is a major key in having a good sleep since there are stages in the sleep cycle which we undergo every time, and we need to get to that third phase where we get to deep sleep mode. And it is only during this stage that we are able to achieve true rest. It is best to sleep at night because it is the natural way of our body clock. We have this inherent biological alarm clock system that allows us to sleep at night and wake up during the day.
So the big question on everyone’s mind is how to sleep better, right? A conducive sleeping environment is naturally essential in order to have that much needed quality sleep. Comfort is definitely a must. A good mattress, not too hard and not too soft either, and free of lumps, will ensure an ache-free body upon waking up. The surroundings should also be noise-free. It is sometimes helpful to have a soft music playing in the background, which produces a hypnotic effect and quiets the mind. Aromatherapy is also something that has become quite popular today for having been found to contribute positively to rest and relaxation. Chamomile and lavender are two of the favorite fragrances associated with aromatherapy because of its tranquilizing effect. A dimly lighted room without adequate ventilation and just the right degree of temperature will also add immensely to the sleepers comfort.
It might also come as a surprise to some that diet plays a role in our sleep pattern. While it is true that we feel sleepy after a heavy meal, it is not advisable to sleep with a full stomach. That is why experts recommend that we only take a light dinner, because we do not want our bodies to have that extra work digesting food when it is already sleeping time.
So ultimately, how to sleep better falls in the individuals hands. As unique beings, we naturally have our own habits and patterns where we feel most comfortable. The important thing to remember is that we have to know how to take good care of ourselves and realize when we are already abusing our health.
