Sleeper Sofas
Sleeper sofas are a popular option to regular sofas. Use them in the living room, family room, den, porch, guest room, or bedroom. Some sectionals also include a sleeper along with recliners. When you need an extra bed, these offer a more comfortable option to cots, sleeping bags on the floor, chairs, or roll-away beds.
There are several size mattresses that you can purchase, usually four inch to eight inch sizes. Sleepers come in different styles also. Most have a full or queen size fold out frame system that extends out perpendicular to the rest of the sofa frame. There are other sofas that can be called sleeper units also, that have a futon style bed with thick mattresses. To open, you fold them upwards until there is a frame click, and then the mattress frame will fold down flat between the sofa arms.
These versatile units add extra sleeping space for guests, and are good for use in small dorm rooms or apartments where you dont have enough room for something like a full leather sectional sofa but want to have both a sofa for seating space, and a bed, but there is not enough room for both pieces of furniture. This style sofa fills both needs in one piece.
Having a steel frame with a full sleeper sofa does make this piece of furniture much heavier than if it was just a sofa. This can be a problem if you want to move the sleeper around the room or to another location. Usually it is not a problem, however, and the weight can even be an advantage when cleaning. All you need to do is put the sleeper into a half way open position and then use it's weight to tip up the sofa so you can sweep underneath easily. Having a steel frame also helps to make the sofa more durable.
Some mattresses are made like regular innerspring mattresses, while others are more like a futon style mattress. Those with springs obviously will be larger and cost more than the thinner mattresses. They also are far more comfortable. Sleeper mattresses should be stored or closed without bedding on them. If you leave the sheets on, they could become caught in the frame mechanism, or cause the unit to not close fully. Always remove bedding before closing up the sleeper.
Having a mattress and frame within a sofa does add to the cost but less than you would pay for another bed and mattress combination. Costs vary with the quality, brand, and materials of the basic sofa unit, and they can run from cheap to very expensive. For example, a $599 sofa at retail would be about $799 as a sleeper. Sleeper sofas continue to remain popular for home, cottage, RVs, and offices.
