I have always been a stomach sleeper for as long as I can remember.  It was never an issue as a kid, or even in most of my adult life, until now.  I recently went through a bout of insomnia and after a sleep test discovered I had sleep apnea and needed a CPAP machine (continuous positive a pressure) to get more sleep.  This worked but I was still feeling achy by morning and stiff.Sleeping on your stomachCredit: pixabay.com

Even with the nose mask on, I was still managing to sleep on my stomach, but the aches and stiffness in my back and neck were getting worse.  I blamed the CPAP machine, but that wasn’t the true reason, it was the angle and pressure placed on my neck and spine while sleeping on my stomach.  I tried flatter pillows, and that didn’t help.  I went to the chiropractor and he said I needed to stop sleeping in this position and switch to my side.  Well easier said than done.

I would start with good intentions to sleep on my side, but by morning I was on my stomach.

Many Online Suggestions Didn't Work For Me

I read many ideas, such as sewing a cork onto the front of your pajama top so that when you rolled over onto your stomach it would be uncomfortable, I also tried memory foam pillows, special neck pillows, but nothing worked until my Chiropractor suggested a body pillow.

I thought these were more for pregnant women, but he said no, they work for everyone.

Use them to Stop You from Rolling onto Your Stomach or Snuggle Them!

Some people will get one for both sides, and sandwich themselves with the idea the long body pillows will stop you from trying to turn over from your back or side.  I was aiming for the side position, so I decided to try one to “snuggle”

This worked like a charm instantly.  It still felt like I was almost on my stomach, but yet my spine and neck were being less stressed.   I placed my leg and my arm onto the pillow in “gecko” position, and slept like a baby.  I was really surprised by how simple this was.

Try it Tonight with an Extra Pillow

If you don’t want to purchase the body pillow just yet, but would like to try this idea, get two extra pillows and have one between your knees on your side and the other up by your shoulders to place your arm around almost the way kids snuggle a teddy bear!  This is how I started, then immediately purchased the extra long pillow as I was pleased with the results.

I am in my late 50s now, and yes, you are going to get aches and pains, but the body is not quite as flexible as it was as a kid when you could sleep in any position and still get up the next day and hit the ground running.

But I have to tell you, something as simple as a body pillow has saved me loads of money on medical aids to deal with the aches, pains and stiffness and not to mention lack of restful sleep.

Give it a Try for a Better Nights Sleep

These body pillows just feel so natural now, if I travel; I just ask the hotel if they have them, if not I ask for extra pillows to snuggle, and this works for me.

Stop sleeping on your stomach, get onto your side and feel rested in the morning.  Life is hard enough sometimes, but without a good night’s sleep it can be worse!
