Small Closet Organization

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

The mass migration of families to the suburbs has reversed itself. Families are now beginning to move back into the urban centers and are buying up older homes. The older homes have charm and character but are also burdened with small closets. Closet organization is always important. It becomes really important when dealing with smaller closets.

If you are faced with the problem of small closet organization, you must first think about the purpose of a closet. In other words what exactly are you going to store in the closet? It is important to limit the scope of the items you wish to store together. If it is going to be a linen closet then stick to storing sheets and towels. If it is going to be a broom closet then limit the items to brooms, mops and cleaning supplies. If it is going to be a front hall coat closet then limit the items to shoes and coats. It is a mistake to attempt to store a diverse number of items in one closet. The exception to this rule could be using a closet for seasonal storage, such as Christmas decorations, extra leaves and table accessories used for setting the table for large family dinners, Halloween decorations, etc.

Once you have decided upon the items to be stored you can then begin to think about how to organize the closet. There are many different and effective closet organization systems on the market. A quick internet search will result in dozens of images. These systems range from reasonably priced to very expensive. Regardless of the prices or if you intend to buy online, reviewing the different products online is a good way to get some ideas for your closets.

If you don't want to spend money on a pre-fabricated organization system, you can create one yourself with a collection of shelves, hooks, and plastic bins. Plastic Rubbermaid bins are great for storing like items. Bottles of cleaning supplies and rags fit perfectly in a 12 inch square plastic bin. When it's time to clean you take the entire bin down.

With a little forethought, every closet in your home can become more effective and easy to use. Small closet design demands that you think carefully about the items you wish to store and the frequency with which you might use these items. Once you've done this, you'll be able to maximize the space available, and create an easy to use and organized closet.
