Small Closet Organization Begins With Discipline

By | Dec 15, 2009 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Small closet organization begins with discipline. All too often we are undisciplined when it comes to our closets. The standard cartoon of someone opening a closet door and being crushed by an avalanche of tennis shoes, umbrellas, and bike helmets is omnipresent. I am willing to bet that every person in North America has, on at least one occasion, used one hand to close a closet door while the other hand/arm is still in the closet propping up an obstacle to closing the closet door.

Whether we have big closets or small closets, we tend to be reckless with respecting the reasonable capacity. Over stuffing a closet is a big mistake that we all make from time to time. A closet that contains too much stuff (call it junk) can never be organized. Even a huge walk in closet can be over filled. As the title says, small closet organization begins with discipline.

Accumulating an assortment of belongings that have various levels of utility is directly related to the number of years one resides in the same dwelling. Of course, an individual's pre-disposition to collect is also a determining factor in the extent of the accumulation. However, even a minimalist can collect of accumulate semi-useless items. Whether you are a collector (pack rat) or not, the first step in good closet organization is to get rid of some things. Go through your closets with a critical eye. Force yourself to throw out at least 10% of each closet. Throw out more if you are able.

Once you have reduced the number of things that need to be stored you are on the path to closet organization. Having simplified and organized closets de-clutters your life in more ways than one. Psychologists have found direct links between mental health, self esteem, physical health and clutter. There is an excellent book called "Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Big". The author of this book clearly sets out the relationship between clutter and being overweight.

Do yourself a favor; get rid of the clutter in your life. Like the majority of us out there, you probably aspire to having simple and organized closets. If you take the time to think about what the inherent problems with your closets are, and then think about what is holding you back, it really isn't a hard job to get your closets under control. The first and best step towards small closet organization begins with discipline.
